Splatoon 2 Datatminers Reveal New Weapons, Maps, and Possibly Playable Characters

In modern day gaming, it’s not uncommon for gamers to hack into a game’s files and analyze every line of code, hoping to find hints about upcoming content for future updates. One Splatoon 2 gamer went digging through the game’s code and may have found a treasure trove of new content.

Reddit user OatmealDome posted a long list of features, maps, and weapons, which reportedly have come right from Splatoon 2’s update files.  A new map called Line and Tunnel was among the listed stages, along with updated versions of Kelp Dome and Blackbelly Skatepark, both of which were stages in the Splatoon. Shakehouse and Threepoints are also listed, which may be new levels coming to the game’s Salmon Run mode.

In addition to new levels, the datamine also revealed a new weapon type coming to the game: the Squeezer. Designed to take out enemies at long distances, the Squeezer is a semi-automatic weapon that will be a welcome addition to the game’s armory. A Blaster, Charger, and Brella, all with Grizzco branding appear in the update files as well.

The biggest reveal from this datamine, however, has to do with the game’s playable characters, known as squid kids, and the fact that a second playable character type may be coming soon. In the files, in addition to SquidBoy, SquidGirl, and Oct, under the PlayerType data parameter, an OctBoy is also mentioned now.

At this time, it’s unknown if or when this new playable character will be added, but the fact that the data is there leaves the door open to possibilities. We’ll have to wait for Nintendo to make an official announcement to be sure.
