Okinawa Rush – A Retro Style Side Scroller With Great Gameplay

Jump into the fast paced action as Hiro Yashima and save Okinawa from the mysterious Black Mantis Clan. Check out our preview of Okinawa Rush here.

Okinawa Rush

Okinawa Rush is a “person fighter game” or however you would describe it in short here game being developed by Sokaikan in Gillingham, England. I’ve had the pleasure of getting a peek into this amazing game and work alongside Steven Miller, the lead developer, and tester of Okinawa Rush. Steve mentioned that there are mock ups for an arcade version of the game and said “We’ve got a ‘TV Mode’ coming soon with proper scanlines, etc.”

Okinawa Rush

In Okinawa Rush you will be playing as the protagonist Hiro Yashima, a Karate master from Okinawa, who is set the task of saving his village from the mysterious Black Mantis Clan. The clan is after the Shinku-Kiai, an ancient karate training manual that yields massive power for whoever learns its ancient secrets. They want to use this manual to devastate Okinawa and lands further off.

The demo begins with a village under attack where you immediately get thrown into combat. This isn’t a bad thing by any means as you can find the controls in the .txt manual for keyboards and if you have a gamepad hooked up (I’m using a MadCatz Xbox 360 gamepad) it will be auto detected and work instantly. The controls are basic, but that doesn’t mean the gameplay is. There are numerous different attacks and combos you can pull off much like Tekken or Mortal Kombat. Steven revealed that there are even more attacks in development where the final project will have seemingly limitless combos, this will certainly be a hard game to master.

Gameplay is fast paced, but fluid. Very seldom did I see any issues with slow downs or any sort of hiccups, which is rare in a lot of early builds. There was a small issue that was present when I originally downloaded the demo where I couldn’t get past selecting a banner for my profile, but that was fixed immediately after getting in contact with Steve. who assured all issues such as this will be patched up in the final product. In fact, besides that issue the only problems I had were fighting my wife for the computer back, this game is addictive and insanely fun.

Even through working full-time jobs Steven and David Miller are able to stay focused on development. This is truly a work of passion and it shows. Everything is crisp; the graphics are detailed, but still hold that retro style; the music and sound effects are wonderful treats for your ears; and, as I said earlier, the gameplay is fast, but fluid. I can’t wait for its final release.
