Spider-Man The Heist; When Is DLC Not Worth It? Mike October 27, 2018 Opinions 0 Comments
The latest DLC pack for Insomniac’s Spider-Man, The Heist, has released on the PlayStation 4, and fans are gobbling it up. Spider-Man has garnered from reviews and fans all over, and The Heist appears to be more of the same. The problem arises when that more, comes with a price.
The Heist is the first chapter of a three-part pack of downloadable missions that is known as The City That Never Sleeps. The Heist fleshes out Spider-Man’s relationship with the anti-hero, Black Cat. A little extra story in an already great game is already nice, though if you buy the DLC separately, it comes out to paying around ten dollars for each piece of DLC or 25 dollars for the whole thing.
A Little Spider-Man DLC For A Lot Of Money
This would all be fine and dandy if they added something new gameplay-wise. But The Heist does not do this. It seems to just be more of the same. Hopefully, the next two chapters add some new gameplay elements, because honestly, The Heist, by itself, probably should have only been five dollars.
If you follow my opinion pieces on this site, you’ll know that I am a huge fan of ten to fifteen dollar games that are packed with hours of entertainment. But standing at a humble two to three hours of gameplay, such as is The Heist, I am just not a fan of DLC that doesn’t give you a lot of bang for your buck.
Personally, I’ve never seen an issue with paying one or two bucks to get an extra costume or map pack. The only times in which small DLC is a problem for me is if it affects a competitive player to win online. Paying to win is a choice I’m just not down with, and with what happened with everyone’s backlash at EA for Star Wars Battlefront II, I don’t think I’m alone.
Cases Of Bad DLC
When it comes to extra single player content, I’ve always been content to wait for the whole thing to release and see if it’s worth it to me. I am, to this day, still a gigantic Metal Gear Solid fan (and if you don’t believe me, check out our Culture of Gaming YouTube channel for our Metal Gear themed Retro Rumble podcast episode). But no amount of fandom could get me to buy the Ground Zeroes prologue chapter of Metal Gear Solid 5. It was forty dollars for one level, essentially. That is the worst DLC crime that has ever affected me personally.
Then, of course, you have cases like that of Asura’s Wrath for the PlayStation 3. When the true ending of a game is locked behind a pay wall, it is just inexcusable. The Spider-Man DLC, The City That Never Sleeps, won’t act as an actual conclusion to the events of the game’s main storyline. That is what makes this ok, in my opinion.
But still, it all comes back to the price. Some people may think that ten dollars is a reasonable amount of money to spend on the first third of an extra adventure. But when that third is only three hours long, I’m not so sure. In the end, it all comes back to the consumer to decide for themselves. If you want to wait for the whole DLC trilogy to come out, that wouldn’t be a bad idea at all.
But what do you think? What do you expect out of DLC? What about the Spider-man DLC? Is there such thing as bad DLC if it’s not mandatory? Let us know in the comments below!
