Why Link’s Awakening For The Switch Could Spell Trouble

Link's Awakening has been announced as a remake for the Nintendo Switch. But something's not right here. And it's not the beautiful graphics.

The Legend of Zelda Link’s Awakening is getting a long-rumored reboot on the Nintendo Switch. Honestly, the art style looks amazing. Like a stop motion movie. It even kind of reminds me of Yoshi’s Crafted World. Everything looks like it’s right there in front of you. Let’s not forget that Link’s Awakening is one of the great yet underrated Zelda games, despite its lack of X, Y, and shoulder buttons.

So, if I’m so pumped for this new old Zelda game, what has me worried THIS time. It can’t be the quality of the game. We love Link’s Awakening. It can’t be the art style. I just told you it looks amazing. No. It’s the fact that it’s on the Switch.

But Link’s Awakening Is Already on the 3DS

Wow, I don’t know how I managed to hear you roll your eyes from here, but I did. And I have a point, I swear. “Mike,” I hear you ask. “Surely, you don’t suggest that we have this amazing looking game on the 3DS, do you?” No, I don’t. There’s no way the 3DS is powerful enough to handle this new look.

But… what worries me about the game being on Switch is that, now, there are certain expectations that come with this. On the 3DS there are no stakes. Link’s Awakening would just be a portable Zelda on another portable system.

The look wouldn’t need to be nearly as cute as it has become. They could’ve used the Link Between Worlds graphics and no one would have known any better. It wouldn’t have been spectacular, but no one would’ve known.

The Switch Has Big Shoes to Fill

And on the Switch, not only does Link’s Awakening have to fulfill fans need to play a classic in a new way. Not only does this art style raise expectations of this game. But having this remake on the Nintendo Switch means that they are taking a previously portable only game and making it a console game as well as a portable game.

That might not mean anything to some. But to me, that means that Nintendo will most likely be charging $60 for the game. A game that, previously, one could beat in 10-15 hours. That seems like a bit too much to charge to me.

Bang for Your Buck

Of course, I have no way of proving that this is indeed the cost of the new game, but I still think it is a safe bet. This is considering that, as previously mentioned, it’s a Zelda game for the Switch.

We are comparing the content filled open world adventure, Breath of the Wild, to a short, but sweet adventure like Link’s Awakening. And of course, I’d prefer quality over quantity. But new games are expensive these days. One can’t play every single new game out there. One has to make choices. This is the same market where you could play three remade Crash Bandicoot games for $40.

And hey, maybe this new Zelda game will be $40. But either way, I can’t wait for The Legend of Zelda Link’s Awakening to come out on the Nintendo Switch. I only hope that it either has a lower price tag than the other Nintendo Switch Zelda game or they increase the amount of content in the game.
