After what feels like eons of waiting, Gearbox and Eli Roth’s Borderlands adaptation is finally taking shape on the silver screen. Upon first glance, it seems to hold its own, with Cate Blanchett effortlessly embodying Lilith while the rest of the cast brings some Guardians of the Galaxy-esque banter to the table. Jack Black as Claptrap might seem like a no-brainer, but let’s face it, he’s just doing his Jack Black thing. Kevin Hart’s Roland leans more towards the comedian’s signature style than the stoic character we remember, but hey, who’s keeping score?

And let’s talk about Tiny Tina—Ariana Greenblatt’s take is a refreshing departure from the hyperactive rendition in the game. It’s probably for the best; trying to match Ashly Burch’s animated portrayal for an entire movie might be a bit much.

Now, the general consensus? Well, it’s a mixed bag. Some folks on Reddit are cautiously optimistic, while others are bracing for a potential disaster. Even Mountain Dew chimed in with excitement—because if we can’t trust The Dew, who can we trust, right?

PC Gamer’s team seemed mostly underwhelmed, citing Telltale’s superior storytelling in Tales from the Borderlands as a tough act to follow. But hey, if you’re in the mood for some mindless entertainment on a lazy Sunday, this movie might just fit the bill. After all, that piss gag did manage to elicit a chuckle!

It’s been a long road to the big screen for Borderlands. With filming wrapped in 2021 and a slew of reshoots under its belt, fans have been eagerly awaiting its arrival. Well, mark your calendars, because Randy Pitchford announced it’s hitting theaters on August 9, 2024. Let’s just hope it’s worth the wait.
