Speculation Rises: Possible PlayStation State of Play Event Expected This Month

Intriguing chatter from Sony has sparked rumors of a potential PlayStation State of Play presentation scheduled for this month. Enthusiastic fans are eagerly anticipating updates on games and the potential unveiling of surprise announcements.

Sony appears to be gearing up for another PlayStation State of Play event, possibly set for September. With only two such events held this year thus far, gaming enthusiasts are eager to delve into details about eagerly awaited games and uncover any undisclosed gems that might be heading to PS5 during the autumn season. The most recent State of Play occurred in April, which centered around Final Fantasy 16 and culminated in the game’s release in June, ending years of anticipation.

Following the April 2023 State of Play, Sony conducted a comprehensive PlayStation Showcase in June. This event divulged a variety of exciting revelations, including the long-rumored PlayStation handheld device, previously known as Project Q. The showcase also brought forth other thrilling announcements, such as the revival of Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, release dates for Assassin’s Creed: Mirage and Alan Wake 2, as well as fresh trailers for games like Spider-Man 2 and Dragon’s Dogma 2. Additionally, Bungie unveiled the revival of its first-person shooter IP, Marathon.

Yet, the buzz generated by these presentations tends to wane quickly, leaving gamers yearning for more. The latest piece of news came in the form of a significant price hike for PlayStation Plus subscriptions set to take effect on September 6. Industry insider Jeff Grubb hinted on Twitter that murmurs of an upcoming PlayStation State of Play were circulating, and this price hike news seems to be a preamble to that impending event.

All three tiers of PS Plus memberships will witness a price increase, with the premium annual subscription seeing a substantial $40 surge. Following this somewhat underwhelming announcement, PlayStation enthusiasts are undoubtedly primed to hear some positive updates from Sony. September is packed with game releases for both PS4 and PS5, including Mortal Kombat 1, Neowiz’s Soulslike Lies of P, and the highly anticipated Baldur’s Gate 3, which has been making waves since its August launch on PC.

However, the excitement surrounding Starfield, set to launch on September 6 for PC and Xbox Series X/S, has left numerous PlayStation console owners feeling somewhat excluded. A State of Play showcase could be the perfect remedy to uplift spirits. Beyond trailers and game release details, many are hoping for additional insights into the PlayStation Portal handheld device. Although priced at $200 and with some specifications already disclosed, a definitive release date is still pending.
