Red Hook Studios has revealed the initial paid downloadable content (DLC) for Darkest Dungeon 2, titled “The Binding Blade.” Set to release in December, this expansion brings back a fan-favorite hero from the original game, Reynauld, also known as the Crusader. The DLC not only marks the return of the formidable Crusader but also introduces a fresh face, the Duelist, enhancing the gameplay experience with two new playable characters.
It came as a surprise that the Crusader was absent from the early access characters in Darkest Dungeon 2, given his robust and versatile role as a tank, damage dealer, and support/healer reminiscent of a D&D Paladin. Many players considered him a symbolic figure for the game, standing alongside the Highwayman as a sort of mascot.
The Crusader’s skillset in Darkest Dungeon 2 remains faithful to the original, as indicated by The Binding Blade’s promotional material. Described as a battle-hardened knight fueled by radiant Holy fire, the Crusader excels in smiting foes, enduring punishing blows in the front rank, supporting the team with healing and stress recovery, and confronting adversaries with his righteous blade.
However, the Crusader is not the sole focus of The Binding Blade DLC; it also introduces the Duelist, a classic swashbuckler with a distinctive cape and rapier. Embodying the archetype of high damage output, the Duelist possesses the ability to bypass enemy resistances. Additionally, this new character brings unique support functions, such as nullifying allies’ cooldowns.
Beyond the characters, The Binding Blade expands the Darkest Dungeon 2 universe by incorporating a new roaming miniboss and offering playable backstory segments for the new heroes. Although the DLC’s price is yet to be disclosed, it is already available for wishlist on both Steam and Epic platforms. Fans eagerly anticipate the return of Reynauld and the dynamic gameplay enhancements that The Binding Blade promises to deliver.
