Overwatch 2’s Latest Hero Pays Homage to Maui from Moana

Blizzard has recently unveiled the 39th Hero in its popular multiplayer shooter, Overwatch 2. Meet Mauga, a formidable Samoan tank character who has caught the eye of players not just for his impressive stature, but also for his striking resemblance to Maui, the Polynesian demigod from Pixar’s animated hit Moana. However, the connection between the two goes beyond mere looks; Mauga’s voice lines directly reference Maui, a discovery made by keen-eyed gaming YouTuber Dan Bumbler.

In a short video clip shared on social media, Mauga can be heard uttering the iconic phrase, “You’re welcome,” and he doesn’t just say it – he sings it. Fans of Moana will recognize this as a nod to Maui’s memorable musical number in the film. Bumbler’s reaction was one of amused realization: “Y’know, I had a suspicion, and OF COURSE MAUGA SINGS HIS ‘You’re welcome’ VOICE LINE. Blizz, u cheeky bastards,” he exclaimed.

For those unfamiliar with Moana, Maui’s rendition of “You’re welcome” is a standout moment in the movie, making this reference a delightful Easter egg for fans of both franchises. However, the homage has sparked debate among the Overwatch community. Some appreciate the nod to Maui’s character, while others find it contentious, raising concerns about potential stereotypes. The fact that Mauga’s design now draws inspiration from Maui only adds complexity to the discussion.

Beyond the Maui connection, it remains to be seen how Mauga will impact the gameplay in Overwatch 2. With his damage reduction abilities and dual chaingun expertise, he is sure to bring a fresh dynamic to the game. However, it’s important to note that the introduction of a new character might not be enough to reverse Overwatch 2’s current struggles. The game still maintains an “Overwhelmingly Negative” overall rating on Steam, indicating ongoing challenges for the franchise.
