Light or Dark in Marvel’s Midnight Suns Guide

Let’s start with common a question people ask when starting Midnight Suns.

Do your choices matter in Midnight Suns?

Choices don’t matter to the main plot. However, how you respond to dialogue interactions impacts how quickly you gain friendship with the other characters. Additionally, some side plots seem to be impacted by dialogue. I won’t go into detail in this post, but one that comes to mind is the Blade / Captain Marvel relationship.

Light and Dark in Midnight Suns

As the Hunter in Marvel’s Midnight Suns, players can explore their moral compass by choosing between light and dark. It’s tempting to think about these in terms of good and evil, but it’s really not. It’s more similar to D&D style alignment. You are a good superhero in this game no matter whether you choose light or dark, but the choices influence your character build and your demeanor. Each brand has unique advantages. Power is the name of the third option, essentially remaining neutral, or picking a mix of light and dark.

The Hunter is the child of the demon queen Lilith and joins forces with Marvel’s heroes, including the Avengers, to save the world. However, given the Hunter’s lineage, players must navigate moral ambiguity regarding their powers.

The Hunter’s abilities are influenced by a light and dark balance system that is affected by the player’s choices in combat and socializing. It is up to players to decide which path to take to mold the Hunter into the hero they want to be.

Each alignment has its benefits, and players must figure out what works best for their Hunter. With a dynamic morality system and a range of choices to make, Marvel’s Midnight Suns offers an engaging gameplay experience for fans of the Marvel universe.

What’s the Difference?

The Light and Dark branches in Marvel’s Midnight Suns refer to the Hunter’s power source, which is influenced by the player’s choices in conversation and combat. When conversing with other heroes at the Abbey, players will notice that most dialogue options have either a Light or Dark symbol next to them. The Dark options are often harsher and more direct, while the Light options are compassionate and optimistic. As you play more light or dark cards, your alignment will shift as well.

Note the symbols at the bottom of Dark Heal (dark aligned), and Holy Flame (light aligned).

Depending on the situation and their feelings, these choices can elicit positive or negative responses from other heroes. Additionally, they determine what kind of abilities and combat cards the Hunter will have at their disposal. As players progress through the game, their choices will impact the Hunter’s alignment, ultimately shaping them into the hero they want to be.

Light Choices and Abilities

Increasing the Hunter’s Light alignment in Marvel’s Midnight Suns will unlock more support options for players. Light cards cause damage and restore health, making them versatile in combat. Additionally, as players increase their Light alignment, they will gain access to various benefits, including:

  • Ivory Collar: This prevents the next Hunter card from being discarded for one turn, providing additional card protection.
  • Paragon Collar: The next Light Hunter card used is free and does not require any Heroism, allowing for more frequent use of powerful abilities.
  • Light Suit: This provides the passive ability Defender of the Light, making Light and Heroic Hunter cards more likely to land critical hits, significantly boosting combat.
  • Summon Charlie card: Players can summon Charlie to battle for three turns, adding an extra ally to their team and increasing their chances of success.

Dark Choices and Abilities

Players can also choose to increase the Hunter’s Dark alignment in Midnight Suns, which unlocks more offensive options. Dark cards prioritize dealing damage and causing chaos on the field, sometimes even at the expense of the Hunter’s own health. These are typically powerful and can target multiple enemies. Here are the rewards for increasing Dark alignment:

  • Obsidian Collar: This doubles the damage of the next attack card used by the Hunter, providing a significant boost in combat.
  • Renegade Collar: The next Dark Hunter card used is free, allowing for more frequent use of powerful abilities.
  • Dark Suit: This provides the passive ability Dark Champion, making Dark and Heroic Hunter cards more likely to land critical hits and providing an advantage in combat.
  • Annihilation card: This drains Heroism to damage all areas in an area, but the damage is increased for every Heroism. While this ability can be costly, it can deal massive damage to multiple enemies at once, making it a formidable option for players.

Power, or Balanced Choices and Abilities

The third option is called Power, which represents a more neutral and balanced alignment. Some conversation options won’t have any symbol next to them, resulting in Power alignment. Additionally, a mix of Light and Dark responses can also contribute to the Power alignment. The Power branch provides a mix of offensive and defensive abilities, making it a versatile option. Here are the rewards for the Power branch:

  • Balanced Collar: This allows players to draw two Hunter cards, providing more options and flexibility in combat.
  • Bladestorm card: This ability causes damage and Forceful Knockback to targets in an area, making it a useful offensive option.

Which Alignment Should You Choose in Midnight Suns?

This is really a personal choice. As we mentioned in the beginning, choices don’t impact the main story. And even if you are shooting for a Dark or a Light alignment, you can still mix it up sometimes to accomplish certain goals.

Regardless of the chosen alignment, the Hunter will still receive many cards, but focusing on one alignment for a period can speed up progress and provide a more tailored gameplay experience.
