Hogwarts Legacy Achieves Phenomenal Success with Over 22 Million Copies Sold Worldwide

Warner Bros. Games proudly announced that Hogwarts Legacy, the Harry Potter action-RPG, has surpassed the remarkable milestone of 22 million copies sold as of the end of 2023. An impressive 2 million copies were sold during the festive December period alone. David Haddad, President of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, expressed his delight not only in the sales figures but also in the overwhelming positive response from fans, declaring it the best-selling game globally for the entire year.

Haddad effusively praised the game, emphasizing its unique ability to bring the magical world of Harry Potter to life in a fresh and immersive way. He attributed the game’s success to allowing players to fully embrace the wizarding world and storyline, a factor he believes resonated exceptionally well with audiences. Breaking the mold, Hogwarts Legacy claimed the top spot typically reserved for sequels of well-established franchises like Call of Duty, GTA, Madden, and NBA2K.

The peculiar reference to “incumbent’s sequel games” highlighted the game’s exceptional commercial performance, surpassing even the highly acclaimed Elden Ring. Sharing some fun statistics, Warner Bros. disclosed that players collectively invested 707 million hours in the game, brewed 819 million potions, cultivated 1.3 billion magical plants, rescued 593 million magical beasts, and vanquished 4.9 billion dark wizards.

While Warner Bros. celebrated these accomplishments, Haddad hinted at the future, revealing an upcoming Quidditch-based game currently in beta. Although no specific details were provided regarding its release, Haddad assured fans that the game is designed to delight. Additionally, he teased “a series of other things” in the pipeline, promising players deeper engagement with the wizarding world, characters, and stories. While a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is anticipated, details remain scarce.

In discussing the direction of Warner Bros. Games, Haddad emphasized their commitment to live service offerings, potentially hinting at ongoing support for Hogwarts Legacy. Despite previous statements ruling out DLC or expansions, the immense success of the game may influence future decisions, opening up new possibilities for additional content.

PCG’s review likened Hogwarts Legacy to “Harry Potter’s Arkham Asylum moment,” praising it as the best video game in the franchise. Despite controversies surrounding J.K. Rowling, the game received positive reviews from both critics and players, boasting a Metacritic score of 84 and an average user score of 8.5.
