Hasbro’s Big Win: Baldur’s Gate 3 Rakes in $90 Million for D&D Gaming

In recent financial reports, Hasbro, the parent company of Wizards of the Coast, revealed a notable success amidst some lower-than-expected figures: Baldur’s Gate 3, developed by Larian Studios, has brought in approximately $90 million in revenue through licensing deals.

Despite an overall 15% decline in revenues, primarily attributed to drops in consumer products and entertainment segments, Hasbro saw a 10% increase in its Wizards of the Coast and digital gaming divisions. This growth was significantly fueled by licensed digital gaming revenue, with Baldur’s Gate 3 leading the charge alongside Monopoly Go! from Scopely.

During an investors call, Hasbro’s chief financial officer, Gina Goetter, highlighted the significant contribution of Baldur’s Gate 3, stating that it accounted for around $90 million in revenue for the year.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s success has been a beacon for Hasbro, particularly in an otherwise lackluster period. The game boasts an impressive average concurrent player count of nearly 131,000 over the past month and has remained within Steam’s top 10 most-played games since its release six months ago. Furthermore, it continues to maintain a strong presence on Steam’s top sellers list.

With over 500,000 user reviews on Steam, Baldur’s Gate 3 holds an “overwhelmingly positive” rating, with 96% of reviews being positive—an achievement celebrated by Larian CEO Swen Vincke on Twitter.

While Hasbro anticipates a gradual decline in revenue from Baldur’s Gate 3 in the coming years, it expects the game to continue generating profits well into 2024 and beyond. CEO Chris Cocks emphasized the game’s enduring success and hinted at future D&D-based video games, suggesting a promising trajectory for the franchise.

Although specifics about Baldur’s Gate 4 were not disclosed during the call, it’s evident that Hasbro and Larian Studios have ambitious plans for the D&D gaming universe. Cocks hinted at a pipeline of new video games over the next five to 10 years, positioning Baldur’s Gate 3 as just the beginning of an exciting journey.

While Larian Studios is already laying the groundwork for its next project, details remain scarce. Vincke teased fans with cryptic remarks, suggesting that their upcoming venture will defy expectations and likely be unveiled in the distant future.
