Grand Theft Auto V Named The Best Selling Video Game In The US

Grand Theft Auto V continues it four-year path of success by breaking the record set by Wii Sports for best selling video game in the United States.

Grand Theft Auto

Grand Theft Auto V has reached sales figures of 85 million copies in the United States, making it the best selling game in the country’s history. GTA V’s sales have taken over the record that was set by Wii Sports. The Wii’s launch title managed to sell 82 million copies in the States. One of the main factors attributed to the sales of GTA V has been GTA Online’s huge success.

Thus far, it has made over $500 million in microtransactions and has continued to stay up to date with the player base by regularly updating the game.

It’s also widely available.

The other main factor that is also considered is the multiple releases that GTA V had. The title started out life on the PS3 and Xbox 360 before getting ported to the PS4 and Xbox One. The title got a PC release nearly two years after the game was originally released.

GTA V looked like it was set for a record breaker in the States. Since May 2017, it has sold an additional 5 million copies in the US. This shows just how popular the game still is after four years being on the shelves. The title has faced some levels of backlash from the fans. This is down to the lack of single-player DLC that was confirmed by Rockstar way back in 2013. Rockstar director of design Imran Sarwar stated that work on GTA Online has been the reason for the lack of single-player DLC. Nonetheless, GTA Online has proved to be a financially successful decision in the long run.

With the recent announcement of Red Dead Redemption 2, the future of GTA Online is currently up in the air. Rockstar says they have similar plans to work GTA Online’s model to Red Dead.

But with GTA V still making it into top 10 charts all over the world, GTA V will continue to be the ace in the hole for Rockstar and Take-Two.
