In 2017, Sentai Filmworks, the distributor of the show in North America, stated that they were overwhelmed by the response to the show and were hoping to finish the script for Season 3 in the Fall of the same year. However, no further updates were provided after that.
Many websites claimed that the anime would return with a new season in 2019 and 2020, but unfortunately, this did not happen. This delay in the release of Season 3 has left fans wondering if there is any particular reason for the delay.

Gate: Jieitai Kano Chi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri, also known as Thus the Japanese Self-Defence Force Fought There. This Japanese fantasy novel, manga, and anime series has captivated audiences with its unique blend of real-world events and fantastical characters.
Gate opens in present-day Ginza, Japan, where a mysterious portal, also known as the Gate, suddenly appears. Monsters and soldiers wearing medieval armor pour out of the portal, attacking innocent civilians and anything that comes their way. This incident becomes known as the “Ginza Incident,” until the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) push back the hordes of alien armies and establish peace talks with the civilization from the other side of the Gate.
The Gate is home to a wide range of creatures, including dragons and humans posing as armies. As the JSDF begins to initiate a conversation with the leaders of this other world, other nations become wary of Japan’s access to what they call a “Special Region.” The main story of the anime follows Lieutenant and Otaku Yoji Itami of the JSDF, who is sent through the portal to learn about the mysterious creatures inhabiting the new region.
Using his knowledge of fantasy stories he’s read, Itami makes his way around the Empire. With his research and having successfully brought his team back alive, the JSDF manages to initiate peace talks and establish a forward base of operations to protect the earth. To make these negotiations a cakewalk, Itami takes help from his friends, who are old but teenage-like goddesses, and even Princess Pina Co Lada, who is also an Otaku.
As of 2022, there are a total of 17 volumes of the Gate series released by AlphaPolis, with the manga series starting its serialization in 2010. The anime series was released in 2015 and completed its second season, Part 2, in 2016. Fans of the series are eagerly awaiting the launch of the third season, with predictions ranging from 2022 to 2023.
The source material for the Gate series is extensive, with Takumi Yanai, a former member of the JSDF, initially self-publishing the web novel on Arcadia, a self-publishing platform, between 2006 and 2009 under the pen name of Todoku Takusan. AlphaPolis picked up the web novel in 2010 and published a total of five volumes between April 2010 and December 2011, with Daisuke Izuka providing the covers for these novels.
After the printing work was published, the content was removed from Arcadia, and as of July 2015, five volumes of the side stories have been published. AlphaPolis then began reprinting the novels as light novels, splitting each volume into tankobon format with new cover illustrations by Kurojishi. There is even a sequel to the novel series, known as Gate: Weigh Anchor, which does not feature the JSDF but the Maritime Self-Defense Force.
The Gate manga series has a total of 17 volumes, with Satoru Sao as the artist, which began publishing in 2011 and continued until 2020. In 2018, Sekai Publishing translated only two volumes, later citing quality problems with the Volume 2 copies. In 2021, Sekai Project dropped the entire project completely, abandoning the series from their roster.
Gate has also been adapted into an anime series produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Takahiko Kyogoku. With original credits given to Yanai, the scripting was done by Tatsuhiko Urahata, Taaki Suzuki, and Kurasumi
