Dungeon of the Endless: Discovering countless roguelikes on Steam

This captivating tower defense and roguelike hybrid boasts a unique blend of RPG elements and strategic gameplay, setting it apart from the crowd of similar games that have flooded the market over the past decade. As an avid fan, I’ve spent many delightful Sunday mornings engrossed in co-op sessions with a friend, easily sinking hours into this engrossing title without a single moment of regret.

Dungeon of the Endless offers an irresistible proposition: it intertwines RPG mechanics, strategic planning, and the thrill of tower defense, all wrapped up in the unpredictability of a roguelike experience. Each playthrough presents a randomly generated dungeon, ensuring every adventure is fresh and intriguing.

Recently, the game has gone through various Steam sales, offering great deals, but here’s some exciting news for those who haven’t grabbed it yet: Dungeon of the Endless is currently available for free on Steam until July 27th.

Amplitude Studios, the developers responsible for other acclaimed roguelikes like Endless Space and Endless Legend, are also working on a sequel to Dungeon of the Endless titled “Endless Dungeon.” Although the name might imply a mere remake, it ventures in a different direction, opting for a more conventional action roguelike approach, diverging from the original’s distinct pacing and remarkable pixel art.

The appeal of Dungeon of the Endless lies in its strategic complexity. While progressing through the dungeon, players encounter rooms with nodes, where various towers can be placed to collect resources and defend against incoming waves of enemies. By controlling the opening of doors, players can dictate the pace of action and planning. Combat, for the most part, occurs automatically, with players intervening through skill triggers or frantic clicks to escape dangerous situations.

The mix of planning and watching the action unfold is oddly satisfying. Players must be alert, especially on each floor’s conclusion, where one character must carefully carry the precious power crystal to the exit while enemies relentlessly pursue. Advancement between floors is rewarding, as players discover new gear, recruit survivors, and unlock more potent versions of defensive towers.

Amplitude Studios has consistently expanded Dungeon of the Endless, introducing numerous characters with unique abilities. The best part is that most of the DLC content is free, making the game even deeper and more enjoyable than its original release. One particularly quirky update features beloved characters from Team Fortress 2, such as the Engineer and Heavy, seamlessly integrated into the pixel art world of Dungeon of the Endless.

While I’m eagerly looking forward to Endless Dungeon’s release in October, I can’t help but doubt if it will captivate me in the same way as its predecessor. Despite being nine years old, Dungeon of the Endless remains a game I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone, especially since it’s now available for free.
