Dino Dismay: A Review of Jurassic Park (SNES)

A Fossilized Failure.

Jurassic Park (SNES) stands out as one of the hardest video games based on a movie. The game was made by Ocean Software and came out in 1993. It is based on the popular movie with the same name.

In the game, players take on the role of Dr. Alan Grant and must complete a number of tasks before they can safely leave the island. The game is split into two parts: outdoor areas seen from above and first-person sections seen from inside. In the outdoor areas, there is no map to help players find their way, so it is easy to get lost. Also, it’s not always clear what the next goal is because the game does a bad job of telling players what to do. Players can defend themselves from the prehistoric predators with a shotgun and a missile launcher, but there isn’t much ammo, so fighting isn’t very good. The dinosaur AI is completely unimpressive, since they won’t attack you even if they can see you. This makes the game feel more like a walk in the park than a survival game.

The graphics are great in the first-person indoor sections, but without a map, players will spend most of their time trying to figure out where they are. The slow and choppy frame rate doesn’t help. There are hints and tips in the game, but they take up half the screen and make it hard to see dinosaurs coming at you in time to stop them. The game’s weak spot is that it doesn’t have a save or password feature. Without a walkthrough, it’s almost impossible to beat the game. With a non-linear structure, most of the time is spent wandering around aimlessly, which makes the game feel more like work than fun.

In the end, Jurassic Park (SNES) is an action game that tried to do something different, but it didn’t work. Even though the game has big goals, it is almost impossible to beat without a walkthrough because it doesn’t have maps, saves, or passwords. The repetitive parts of the game make players feel frustrated and let down, and the dinosaurs’ AI doesn’t help. If you liked the movie, this game might be fun, but for everyone else, it’s best to stay away from it.

Summary

Jurassic Park (SNES) is a game that tried to do something different with the action genre but fell short in execution. While it deserves credit for its ambitious nature, the lack of in-game maps, saves, or passwords makes it nearly impossible to beat without a walkthrough. The game has a non-linear structure, but players spend most of their time wandering aimlessly, and the laborious gameplay sessions leave players feeling frustrated.
