All things considered, this year has been a rather prominent and strong fiscal cycle for video games and gadgets. But what is in store for 2018?

All things considered, this year has been a rather prominent and strong fiscal cycle for video games and gadgets. With the release of consoles such as the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One X in addition to tons of AAA & indie games, 2017 will be remembered as a notably active era.

However, with the current year coming to a close, there are countless things to look forward to in 2018. Here, we will discuss and analyze the most anticipated releases in the video game world for next year.

What We Already Know

Street Fighter V Arcade Edition (Jan. 16; PS4 & Windows)

Very early on in the year, we have the release of the latest edition port of this critically acclaimed fighting game franchise. It serves as a follow-up to the most recent installment and will contain several exclusive features. These include updated graphics and interface, the brand-new Arcade & Extra Battle modes, over 200 different endings, and codes for all available DLC characters from Seasons 1 and 2 of the game, according to one IGN source.

Monster Hunter World (Jan. 26; PS4 & Xbox One)

This upcoming action RPG by Capcom has a lot to offer. The title, which was announced at Sony’s E3 Conference earlier this year, will have some updated components. These include worldwide four-player online co-op as well as including seamless transitions through much larger maps than previous installments.

As seen in the latest playable PS4 demo, the game will also contain many quests to complete and weapon types. Finally, to further sweeten the deal, the protagonist Aloy from Horizon: Zero Dawn is also planned as a playable character. Many of the new details are available via the Engadget website here.

Metal Gear Survive (Feb. 20; Windows, PS4 & Xbox One)

Coming later in the month of February is the newest entry into the Metal Gear franchise. This game will put a spin on the survival action-adventure genre by setting it in an open-world environment and featuring cooperative multiplayer. It is unsure whether stealth will remain a vital portion of the game. However, the plot is undeniably unique and rather unusual.

The title will also have the player fight off and evade hordes of zombie-like creatures in an alternative reality. In addition, it will be curious to see how Konami fares with the game’s development and release. This notion is mystifying especially considering the departure of Hideo Kojima from the franchise.

This next entry comes as no surprise for fans of the hack-and-slash series who have kept up to date with recent video game conventions and developments. The upcoming action-adventure game will blend many of its established themes and mechanics with some new and refined aspects. These include polished camera angles, updated gameplay elements, never-before-seen weapons, as well as a lengthy (25-35 hour) story, says GamesRadar.com.

This time, the plot centers around eponymous protagonist and anti-hero Kratos as he sets out with his son Atreus into the Scandinavian wild. Far Cry 5 (Mar. 27; Windows, PS4 & Xbox One)

The fifth mainline installment into the long-running Ubisoft FPS franchise is confirmed for a March 27 release date as of now. Within it, players will explore a vast area set in a fictional city in Montana, US as they assume the role of a sheriff’s deputy. The deputy has the task of bringing a seedy, radical preacher to justice for his crimes.

Far Cry 5 will carry over most gameplay and story elements of previous titles, albeit with slight twists and turns. Some brand new gameplay mechanics present in this installment include fishing, manually recruiting soldiers, and a cooperative multiplayer mode. (Kotaku, PC Gamer) A few other aspects of previous games, such as the buddy system in Far Cry 2 and animal taming mechanic in Primal, will also be present in the main game. The different setting of this particular title, as well as the unconventional themes shown in trailers, is enough to grab our interest.

Agony (Mar. 30; Windows, PS4 & Xbox One)

This title is a bit different from the previous games in this list in that it is in the works by an un-established developer. Created by Madmind Studio and being published by PlayWay, Agony is a truly terrifying first-person survival horror game.

Players will take on the form of a soul in distress that is lost deep in the bowels of the underworld. In this game, you must use only your special powers to possess others to get through this torment and find clues about the universe’s lore and plot. Not much else is certain, except for the fact that you must run and hide from demons and solve puzzles in order to progress in the story.

The most intriguing aspects of Agony have to be the nightmarish setting, convincing graphics, and unique storyline. Soma was Amnesia in space while this game is Amnesia in (quite literally) Hell.
