From Software’s Dark Souls series has inspired many similar titles since its launch such as Lords of The Fallen, The Surge, and Nioh. While all of these titles are great games in their own right, none of them quite live up to the greatness of the souls series.
Bandai Namco’s newest project Code Vein is the latest Soulsborne-inspired game set in a post-apocalyptic world. This new title can basically be looked at as if Dark Souls and the God Eater series conceived a child and out came an anime Soulsborne game.
So What is Code Vein?
Well, Code Vein is a third-person action RPG set in a not so distant future which has been ravaged by the “Thorns of Judgement” which has brought about new dangers to this post-apocalyptic world. Developed by the minds that brought us the God Eater series, Code Vein has you playing as a vampiric revenant (or “Vein”) tasked with defeating demonic and monstrous creatures scattered across a post-apocalyptic world. Fear not though, you won’t be alone in your travels. Using a companion system you can recruit an ally to fight with and travel alongside you.
Since this is a world of vampires it’s safe to say there will be the occasional drink of blood. When drinking the blood of enemies you gain access to a range of supernatural powers. Known as gifts, these can be customized and upgraded based on your preferred playstyle. Judging by the trailer, they can also have an impact on your appearance, too. How heavy the customization extends remains to be seen.
The debut trailer only provided us with a few brief moments of actual gameplay. As expected, it looks as if Dark Souls and Bloodborne have been recreated in anime form. The combination of attack and defense is key to your success, with players requiring a sense of patience to take down enemies, learning their patterns and knowing when the perfect time to strike is. As with the Souls series exploration is also encouraged and pretty much mandatory, with many areas in Code Vein covered in thorns, fire, destruction and possibly ice from what can be seen in the trailer due to the events that brought everything to ruin.
