The Master mode of the newest 'Destiny 2' Raid, Vow of the Disciple, has just launched but is it worth running? Unfortunately, no it isn't.

Destiny 2, Bungie

Bungie has just released the Master version of their newest Raid, Vow of the Disciple, for ‘Destiny 2′. This new mode challenges players with a higher base difficulty, more complex enemies to encounter, and some new loot to chase once they’ve beaten the raid. Unfortunately, the loot, particularly the new Adept versions of the raid weapons, are not really worth the grind.

What does Master mode Vow of the Disciple ask of you? It is 20 Light levels higher than the season’s pinnacle cap (1580 up from 1560) so all enemies hit harder and need more damage to be taken down. Next up is the addition of even more Champion tier enemies to the raid, meaning that players will need to restrict their loadout to whatever the current Unstoppable and Overload mods are in that given season in Destiny 2. Finally, to get the Adept versions of the Vow of the Disciple weapons, you will need to complete the weekly challenge on Master mode, which will award you one of the weapons from that encounter’s loot table.

It is a step up in difficulty. Yet it certainly is not worth the effort required.

Bungie stated that you may be able to get an Adept weapon from completing any Raid encounter). It cannot roll with enhanced perks, making my crafted version already better in general play, and in addition to that, the Adept version may drop with poor perks that I cannot change.

The Adept version of the SMG Submission cannot roll with enhanced perks.

The only true saving grace here is that Adept raid loot can slot Adept mods and they each gain bonus stats after being masterworked. However that only really makes the Linear Fusion Rifle, Cataclysmic, a worthwhile option to grind seeing as it can be used as a reliable DPS weapon on bosses, where Adept Big Ones would aid in its damage. Even then, a crafted Cataclysmic with enhanced perks may already outperform it in damage output.

All in all, when compared to their crafted versions the Adept raid loot just simply isn’t desirable enough to warrant anyone spending a significant amount of time grinding the Master raid.

This effect on Adept weapons largely comes from them not having been updated to match the power and freedom given to players by the crafting system. In activities where the original version of an Adept gun is not available to craft, such as Grandmaster Nightfalls or Flawless Trials cards, there is a reason to chase those guns, minimal stat increases and all. in Master Vow of the Disciple, however, the investment required to get a good version of an Adept gun is simply too much time that could be spent leveling up a crafted version of that same gun.

A solution may be to let Adept weapons be reshaped after the player has acquired them, allowing the gun to be leveled up and giving it the chance to unlock enhanced perks. Giving people the option to have both Adept mods and enhanced perks would certainly go a long way to make these weapons viable and sought after, but it may introduce more severe problems: power creep being the primary one. Would Adept big ones and enhanced high-impact reserves truly be too intrusive on the sandbox?

Bungie has hinted in a previous This Week At Bungie that they were looking at changing Adept weapons and their place in ‘Destiny 2‘, specifically when talking about Trials of Osiris. Whether these changes make their way over to other areas with Adept gear is yet to be seen, but I certainly do not envy Bungie’s task in making excitable new gear for players to chase.

Master Vow of the Disciple is worth playing if players wish to get their hands on the Disciple-Slayer Title and seal, but not really worth it if they are after new gear or guns: trust me, the ones you have are likely better.
