Unless you’ve been living under a rock the past few days, you know that the recent Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct dropped some new content that has everyone excited. Some of the reveals, however, got us more hyped than others. Because of this, we wanted to discuss the top five reveals from the Direct. Keep in mind that we won’t include small reveals, such as new items or assist trophies, in this list. With that out of the way, let’s get started.

800+ Songs Playable in Sleep Mode

Usually, the music within a game doesn’t take the spotlight in a Direct. Well, not this time. Director Masahiro Sakurai revealed that over 800 songs from all across both Nintendo and gaming history will feature in the game. He also stated that players can select songs that play during matches beforehand. Songs will be organized based on franchise, so if you decide to play on a Metroid stage, you can choose any Metroid song to play in the background. Finally, as if things couldn’t get better, Sakurai mentioned that players can listen to all of the game’s music while their Switch is in sleep mode. This basically turns your Switch into a giant iPod that plays some of gaming’s greatest hits! Who wouldn’t get excited over that?

Dracula’s Castle Added as a New Stage

If you somehow didn’t get excited over the new Castlevania characters added to Ultimate, then you surely started freaking out when Dracula’s Castle made its debut along with them. That’s right, players can now tussle within the home of the vampire king. Monsters and other enemies from the Castlevania series will also appear on the stage as hazards, along with Dracula himself as a boss. Not only that, but players can break candles on the stage in order to gain items. From the looks of it, Dracula’s Castle could bring out some interesting strategies from fighters who use its features well.

103+ Stages and Stage Morph Feature

Speaking of stages, the Direct later unveiled that Ultimate will contain over 103 stages for players to enjoy, with more on the way. If you include omega and battlefield versions, then that raises the number to over 300. Wow.

Sakurai also confirmed that stage hazards can be toggled on and off, for those of you who don’t want to deal with them. To top it off, a new feature called Stage Morph will also be included. This will cause one stage to transition into another during matches. The players choose the stages before the fight, and the feature itself must be turned on. This new element will definitely add some new layers to Smash Bros. gameplay.

New Squad Strike and Smashdown Modes

We gained a plethora of information regarding game modes from the Direct. While some familiar modes return, such as Classic Mode and Stamina Battle, some new ones also got included. Namely, the new Squad Strike and Smashdown modes. In Squad Strike, players create teams of characters to pit against each other that can be switched between during battle. This includes both 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 matches, meaning you can finally see your favorite fighters work together to beat the snot out of each other. In Smashdown, characters become locked once used, which forces players to choose different fighters after each match. This creates a fun new element that will allow players to use characters they normally wouldn’t. That means no more spamming Falcon Punch every match… you know who you are.

Simon Belmont, King K. Rool, and More Fighters added

The most exciting part of any Super Smash Bros. game usually involves new fighters added to the roster. With that said, you can imagine most of the world screaming for joy when both Simon and Richter Belmont from Castlevania appeared as a new fighter and Echo respectively. Things got even crazier when Sakurai announced Chrom from Fire Emblem and Dark Samus from Metroid as Echoes for Ike and Samus. Finally, Nintendo decided to shatter our minds even more. At the end of the Direct, the long-awaited King K. Rool finally made his first Smash appearance. This probably surprised fans the most, considering the villain’s absence from the more recent Donkey Kong games. Sakurai also teased that more fighters will come along soon, leading to more anticipation for an already packed roster.
