It has been 24 years, but the time has come to return to the streets. Developed by Lizardcube and Guard Crush games and published by DotEmu, we got the unexpected announcement of Streets of Rage 4.
Back during the age of Sega Genesis, the Streets of Rage series (also known as Bare Knuckle in Japan) followed the Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding in their fight against the Crime Syndicate Boss: Mr. X. In some ways, you can say that Streets of Rage was Sega’s Final Fight, and saw three titles before it faded away. Or at least until now.
Streets of Rage 4 will bring back the glorious side-scrolling beat-em-up while bringing in new mechanics and hand-drawn sprites. While there has been a variety of playable character in the Streets of Rage games, we only know of just two playable characters at this time. Could we see a third playable character before the game comes out?
It can be daunting to consider reviving a series that has not been touched for decades. For developer Lizardcube, they are more than ready to accept the challenge. Last year, we got Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, which was a remake of the 1989 game of the same name. The game got mostly positive reviews, so it would be safe to say that Streets of Rage will be in good hands.
While we got the official reveal trailer, we do not have a release window. Most likely, it will take some before we get to get more information on when we can get our hands on it.

How’s it going everyone, I’m Mike Sol and I am one of many contributing writers to Culture of Gaming. You can usually find me playing some of the latest games to come out, although I tend to avoid anything related to sports or strategy. I enjoy the big three and all the games on them but my main console is the Xbox One. I don’t have a specific preference in gaming, but any game that has fun action and beating up waves of enemies is usually my cup tea. If you ever want me to game with me or want me to write about something of interest, feel free to hit me up. I hope to have a personal blog set up soon, but my loyalties shall remain with CoG.
