Thanks to Netflix and their slew of original content taking over our precious viewing time, Stranger Things is probably the show with the biggest following and hype behind it. With its love affair of 80’s nostalgia, pop culture references, and the sci-fi supernatural, this is no surprise. And to celebrate season 3’s Independence Day launch, Nike is releasing a set of apparel and sneakers inspired by the town’s very own Hawkins High School.
The Nike x Stranger Things Backstory
Set in the mid-80’s, this season of Stranger Things finds the town of Hawkins, Indiana, amid some serious change. Our group of heroes are dealing with being on the cusp of high school, whilst also grappling themes of friendship and love. On top of that, they must tackle the looming danger of the ever-evolving D&D inspired Big Bad.
As is the case with the series so far, nostalgic 80’s fashion is the go-to for the Hawkins massive. Costuming sees classic Nike footwear and clothing everywhere. And here lies the incentive behind the Nike x Stranger Things collection, especially highlighting infamous footwear of the time with the Cortez, Blazer, and Tailwind.
These silhouettes represent the changing of the sporting world in 1985, which happens to be when Stranger Things is set. And, what is now a hugely influential year for Nike themselves. 1985 is the year Nike’s Air technology was created, as well as the Dunk being vastly adopted throughout basketball. It is quite strange then (excuse the pun) that Nike didn’t think to include either of these in the Stranger Things collection.
Any who, the styles that are in the collection have maintained their top spot as style must-haves. As a result, the collaboration celebrates both entities, granting personal meaning and timely authenticity to the Stranger Things collection.
The Hawkins High School Pack
The first release of the Nike x Stranger Things collaboration features the colours of Hawkins High School. The green and orange colour-way, along with the school’s Tiger mascot are synonymous with the phys-ed style of 80’s apparel and footwear. The ones to look out for are the leather Nike Cortez‘s with their classic clean and green look and Hawkins High patches. It is pretty easy to see why the Cortez is still a sport and style staple.
These pieces launched on June 27, 2019.
The Independence Day Pack
The second release of the Nike x Stranger Things collaboration features nothing but shoes, glorious shoes. Aptly named as each shoe carries a patriotic red, white and blue colour scheme with special detailing in the sock liner for extra patriotism. All to commemorate Independence Day.
My favourite from the collection being the Nike Tailwind with the throwback colour scheme of Forrest Gump’s legendary Nike Cortez. This colour-way is also reminiscent to that of Marty McFly’s Nike Bruin famously worn in Back To The Future. To round it all off, their use of a mixture of materials, including a creamy mesh upper, completes the retro movie aesthetic.
These pieces launch on July 1, 2019.
Be sure to grab yours ASAP as anything with as much hype as Stranger Things will sell out FAST!
