Just a few days before it was set to launch, Sonic Mania has been delayed on PC. The game will still be released on August 15th on Switch, PS4, and Xbox One as scheduled. Don’t fret though, Sega have promised a freebie to make up for the delay.
The news of the delay was announced by Sega in a livestream on August 11th. Sega say that the PC version of the game requires a bit more optimization, and as such has been delayed until August 29th. During the livestream there was also an un-boxing of the Sonic Mania collectors edition.
We are not going to put out a game that is not the best it can be. And we’re going to maintain that level of quality and consistency, and dedication to that quality. It’s so important to us. Sonic Mania exemplifies that. – Community Manager Aaron Webber
To apologize for the unexpected delay Sega is giving out free Steam copies of Sonic the Hedgehog. This will be available to anyone who has pre-ordered Sonic Mania before August 15th. The original Sonic the Hedgehog released on Steam in October 2010 priced at $4.99.
News of the delay is sure to upset many fans who were eager to get their hands on the latest 2D entry to the series. The free offering of Sonic the Hedgehog is nice, but many people pre-ordering Sonic Mania are likely to have already played the original Sonic. There is sure to be some fan backlash following this news. Sega have been promoting Sonic Mania as a return to classic form for the massively popular platformer, and series fans have been in a frenzied excitement since the announcement.
