Ever wanted to play Rocket League with your Playstation-owning friend, but you own an Xbox? Pretty soon, that will become a reality. Rocket League developer Psyonix is releasing an update that allows users from multiple platforms to become friends, join clubs, and play together.
How will it work? To distinguish between friends on your platform of choice, and friends from across the gap, friends will now be separated into two lists: platform friends and RocketID Friends. Platform friends can sync with each other by using the platform’s built-in online service, just like always. RocketID friends, however, can connect through a username and short passcode, similar to Discord. Simply type in your friend’s username, and you’re connected!
Up until this point, only users on Xbox, PC, and Switch could play together. But starting February 19, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and PC will all support the Rocket League friends update.
This update is the second major hurdle in a long history of PlayStation exclusivity. For the longest time, Sony refused to allow cross-play or cross-progression with other consoles. Due to internal policies, Sony locked Fortnite players to their console and caused game developers like Bethesda to put them down publicly. But last November, Sony finally caved and gave Fortnite users the ability to plays cross-platform, with Rocket League in the works for future cross-play ability. Well, that second part will come to pass in a couple short weeks; Sony truly has transitioned.
