PlayStation 5 Reveal Event: All The Flops
Well, we got our first deep dive into the performance capabilities of the PlayStation 5. One thing is for sure, it has the flops. In a digital live stream, a few hours ago at the time of this writing, Sony revealed a lot of numbers for the PS5. So many numbers. ALL OF THE NUMBERS! However, I actually found myself somewhat engrossed in the information.
The presenter went into detail showing how the architecture of the hard disk drives worked versus adding a solid-state drive for the PS5. Additionally, they explained thoroughly how the CPU would be able to complement the GPU allowing for better processing power and load times.
One of the key things many gamers worry about is carrying their games over to the next generation. Sony all but confirmed backwards compatibility for the PS5 by discussing how they have integrated the architecture of PS4 titles into the PS5 chipset. Previously, as seen with the PS3, Sony built backwards compatibility into the systems by adding the hardware for the previous system separately. This was far more costly as was seen in the PS3. Now with the PS5, we can optimistically expect easy integration of PS4 titles and hopefully all titles currently available on the PS4.
Hard Disk and Solid State
The presenter explains how with the previous hard disk drives in prior generations were not able to load at the speeds that we can see with solid-state drives. He explains the amount of time it would take to load roughly a gigabyte of data with a hard disk drive explaining loading and seeking functions. The solid-state drive removes the seek function and can load significantly faster with less effort. They are boasting they can load in the range of gigabytes per second.
They also shared they would be able to handle upgrades to the solid-state drives in the PS5 allowing gamers to have more say over the storage of their systems. This is very important as we move heavily into the already digital age.
What Do These Specs Mean For Gamers
The biggest take away for gamers is what these specs can mean for developers. It offers an immense amount of developer freedom that we have never seen before. Games previously would have long staircases or winding hallways to allow for games to load without stopping player movement. With this step into next-gen, we see a jump in the level of developer freedom we probably haven’t seen before. We won’t know for sure the capabilities until we see them firsthand, but it sounds promising so far.
We are looking to make a jump into an age where consoles will have near-instantaneous load times and persistent loading of massive worlds seamlessly. The player experience will open up immensely. As an avid PC gamer, I have always said consoles hold gaming back in a lot of ways. Consoles were never as powerful as PCs and in order to reach a mass audience, developers designed their games with consoles and PCs in mind. This restricted games to what consoles were capable of not what PCs could achieve. Now that gap is disappearing and bringing consoles in line with PC capabilities.
This is a win for literally everyone, except Nintendo, but that is a story for another day. In the meantime, I highly suggest everyone take a look at the reveal. It will take an hour of your time and is very tech-oriented, but you can discern some awesome details about the next generation by watching.
Another PS5 reveal is coming soon and we will get a first look at the actual hardware. Make sure to check back in and we will ensure you stay up to date on the latest gaming events.
