Having great vision is something many of us take for granted. But staring at bright screens all day long can play havoc with tired eyes, causing eye strain, headaches and more. When that happens, you have two choices – take a prolonged break from your screens and/ or consider taking a vision supplement.
The ideal vision supplement will prevent eye strain and enhance optical health while keeping costs low.
Today, we’re taking an in-depth look at Performance Lab Vision. This eye-oriented supplement has been on the market for a little while now and the consumer reviews speak for themselves – this is a quality vision supplement. But what is actually in each capsule? And how can they help with your vision? We’ve got the answers to all of your questions…
Vision Problems Facing Gamers
The most common eye-related issues experienced by dedicated gamers are screen fatigue, headache and visual problems.
Screen fatigue (also known as digital eye strain) is extremely common. The average person now looks at a screen for more than six hours per day – and that doesn’t even count gamers – which explains why this issue is so prevalent in modern society.
The most common mental symptoms resulting from screen fatigue are an inability to focus and headache. Physical symptoms include eye strain as well as neck, back and shoulder pain. If you regularly experience some or all of these, there are some non-supplement options available. Try replacing your old office chair for a new one with better back support, for instance, or ensuring your monitors are at a correct height and distance for you.
You might have seen tinted glasses marketed as a cure for screen fatigue. These are often orange or blue colored and are supposed to block some of the blue light emitted from screens from reaching your eyes. The downside is you look stupid wearing tinted glasses indoors (and they can cost upwards of hundreds of dollars for a decent pair!) Thankfully, there are supplements that can decrease the effects of screen fatigue too.
Performance Lab Vision is a natural, safe and legal way to gain an advantage in gaming, thanks to its ability to protect the macula in the eye from the harmful effects of blue light rays.
It pledges to support the macula for glare reduction and flash recovery, enhance night vision, and potentially help to reduce screen-related vision strain and eye fatigue. Bonus: it may also improve reaction time – more on that later!
Lutein and Zeaxanthin
Lutein and Zeaxanthin both help to sift out damaging blue light (which is linked to eye strain, ophthalmic fatigue and poor acuity). They also have the potential to reduce symptoms of age-related macular degeneration.
Each capsule of Performance Lab Vision contains 10mg of Lutein and 2mg of Zeaxanthin. Both of these are sourced from a GMO-free marigold flower extract called FloraGLO.
Various clinical trials have been conducted into the effects of Lutein and Zeaxanthin and many demonstrate real significance. For example, one trial showed that FloraGLO lutein improves photo-protection from blue light – meaning Performance Lab Vision could certainly protect your precious eyesight from unnecessary damage.
Let’s talk about blue light. All light emitted from phone screens, computer screens, tablets, car displays, TVs and so on is called blue light, no matter what color it actually is. Blue light has a very short wavelength which means it has a large amount of energy. This is why it’s more harmful to our eyes. It can break apart molecules like melatonin and interfere with all sorts of important chemical processes. Our eyes have evolved to use sunlight as the main light source (which is more yellow/orange than blue). The supplements in Performance Lab Vision can’t 100% prevent blue light causing damage (that’s impossible), but they do limit the harm it causes.
Did you know these are over 17 different types of headache? Many of these can be triggered with visual disturbances caused by looking into bright light for too long, squinting or sitting with poor posture. To help prevent headaches; limit your screen usage, work in a well-lit room and take regular breaks.
Certain natural ingredients have also been shown to decrease the frequency of headaches and/or decrease the severity of headaches. Saffron extract has been shown to reduce blood pressure, which can relieve pressure inside the skull, easing or eliminating headaches entirely.
Saffron is probably best known as the world’s most expensive spice, often used in Spanish and North African cuisines. However, it can do much more than flavor your next paella – the active ingredients in saffron (safranal and crocin) are great for maintaining eyesight. Both crocin and safranal boost blood flow to the eyes and help with motion detection and glare reduction. The saffron sourced from Performance Lab Vision contains a minimum 1mg of 0.3% safranal.
Saffron has also been shown to increase visual acuity (that’s the posh way of saying clarity of vision). One study showed that “In persons with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), supplementation of saffron extract daily for three months was able to improve retinal function”.
This, along with various other studies, seems to suggest that Performance Lab Vision is the ideal vision supplement.
Astaxanthin – it’s hard to spell correctly and even harder to find on the ingredients list of most supplements. This rare antioxidant is sourced from potent, red algae called haematococcus pluvialis.
1mg of Astaxanthin is included in every Performance Lab Vision capsule because it increases blood flow to the eye’s retina, maintaining eye function by ensuring oxygen and other essential nutrients are quickly transported from around the body towards each eye. Increased blood flow to the eyes should also decrease eye fatigue.
Although Astaxanthin is sourced from algae, don’t expect to find any traces of seaweed or driftwood in this product. The algae used are organically grown under strict conditions, preventing any unwanted bacteria or organisms from finding their way into the final product. The Astaxanthin used is as pure as it can possibly be, and it’s grown using eco-friendly techniques too.
European Bilberry Extract (25mg)
Bilberries (also known as European blueberries) are a dark-blue colored fruit that can be eaten raw or processed into jams, pies and fools. In France, they’re often used to produce alcoholic liqueurs. They aid vision because of their anthocyanoside content. Anthocyanosides are brightly-coloured pigments that are used in a variety of medicines. They’re most commonly used to treat stomach ulcers, but they play important roles in many chemical processes. However, they’re included in Performance Lab Vision because they support the synthesis and use of rhodopsin and C3G.
Rhodopsin is a molecule found in the rods of the retina and activates night vision, helping the eyes adjust quicker to dark environments.
European Freeze-Dried Blackcurrant (300mg) and European Black Currant Extract (25mg)
As well as bilberry extract, Performance Lab Vision contains blackcurrant extract. Blackcurrant extract contains C3G. C3G (Cyanidin-3-glucoside) is the Anthocyanoside found in Bilberry extract that allows the body to generate Rhodopsin, which in turn allows us to see. This should enhance night vision by allowing your eyes to adapt to darkness quicker. It also accelerates retina-to-brain signaling.
- The anthocyanins and C3G in the blackcurrant extracts contained within Performance Lab Vision may help to support eye-signalling speed, namely the retina-to-brain signalling speed. This can mean faster reaction times and high-speed vision. Both ideal for gamers.
- Performance Lab uses 100% natural vegan-friendly Plantcaps to package their vision supplements.
- Performance Lab Vision is free from gluten, soy, colorants, preservative and other unnecessary additives.
- It’s also caffeine and allergen-free as well as being vegan and vegetarian-friendly.
- Unlike some other supplements, it’s safe for long term use.
- This supplement is 100% legal so if you’re an athlete or competitive gamer worried about drug testing, you’ve got nothing to fear! None of the ingredients in Performance Lab Vision is currently banned by any sports leagues.
- Performance Lab Vision comes in at $40 for 30 capsules; that might look expensive at first glance, but we believe it’s worth paying for quality.
Any Side Effects?
With its super clean formula, it’s unlikely that Performance Lab Vision will cause any side effects. If minor side effects like stomach discomfort and headaches do occur, however, you should discontinue use.
How to Take
Take one to two capsules with your first meal of the day, ideally breakfast. For best results, use daily. Although you may experience the benefits from taking this supplement immediately after swallowing your first capsule, the best results seem to come from long-term use.
There’s a lot to like about Performance Lab Vision. Not only is the packaging sleek and stylish, but every jar of capsules has the ingredients clearly stated on the side, so you know exactly what you’re putting into your body and how much of each supplement you’re consuming.
The company that produces Performance Lab Vision is Opti-Nutra, a well-respected supplement manufacturer based in the UK.
