It’s Nostalgia time again!
Here’s one for you nostalgia heads out there. Xbox co-founder Seamus Blackley has confirmed that the original Xbox controller will be making a return. The controller known as “The Duke” has a cult following as large as the hefty controller itself. In comparison to today’s Xbox controllers, the 2001 monolithic slab of buttons and joysticks that has been on a hardcore diet plan over the years.
Blackley posted on his Twitter an image of the controller with the caption “#NewDuke has gone to tooling and is approved by @Xbox THIS IS HAPPENING!” He also stated in another tweet that there would be some changes to the new model, but it would have “the same old feel.”
If this controller keeps the original feel to it then we have to ask: Will it trade out today’s left and right bumpers for the black and white buttons? That’s an automatic case of hand cramp if I do say so. The main game people remember using the black and white buttons with was for Halo. Players could switch on Masterchief head torch, white being on and black being off.
From the tweets we currently have, Microsoft gave certification to the final prototype. A new prototype design stage has likely started to make mockups for the controller. Blackley didn’t reveal any more details about any upcoming changes. We can take a guess that some features we will see: Including a nine-foot breakaway cord and an LED display screen.
This controller paired with the ever-growing list of backward comparability enabled titles Microsoft has, it is becoming easier and easier to get that nostalgia kick that we all crave sometimes. We don’t have a timescale as of now or a price tag, but we hope that they’ll be ready for pre-order sometime around Christmas.
