Fans rejoice as most of the recently remastered Final Fantasy games come to the Nintendo Switch. This includes Final Fantasy 7, 9, 10, 10-2, and the recently announced Crystal Chronicles. Along with these announcements, comes renewed complaints from fans that Final Fantasy 8 has yet to see remastering of any kind, on PS4 or otherwise. The truth seems that Square-Enix would love to remaster it, but cannot at the current time.

My Feelings About Final Fantasy 8 (A Preface)

First of all, seeing as this is an opinion piece, you deserve to know how I view Final Fantasy 8. After all, the entry in the franchise receives praise from some fans and vitriol from others. But simply put, my feelings are complicated.

Performance Lab® - Not all supplements are the same

My stance on this entry in the franchise is that I had a lot of fun with Final Fantasy 8. The junction system did not deserve the flack it got, and I rarely found myself farming for magic. I had fun with the card game, and the music, to this day, includes some of the best tracks in the entire series.

However, I did not care for the characters and I felt the story over all, was kind of a dumpster fire. That’s not to say that I couldn’t appreciate the themes of the story. Getting thrust into a leadership role when authority keeps secrets from you and lets you down. The themes were wonderful as well. But the characters and situations hindered an otherwise fantastic experience.

Why Final Fantasy 8 Was Never Remastered

Nothing made Final Fantasy a household name quite like Final Fantasy 7. So, after this mega blockbuster of a game became such a hit, Square got antsy. They did not want to put all their eggs in one basket, so to speak. So, they started working on Final Fantasy 8 right away. And other Final Fantasy projects as well.

They saw how the Final Fantasy name did not get big until they moved it to a futuristic setting. So, Square was adamant that FF8 take place in a futuristic setting as well. But seeing as there were other projects as well, the teams were rushed and spread thin.

The plans included a spinoff in the old medieval style (which eventually became Final Fantasy 9) and, of course, the Final Fantasy movie: The Spirits Within. The quality of both the movie and FF9 not in question, this left FF8’s team rushed. The pressure Square was under, lead to a lot of the original files becoming saved over. This means that if Square-Enix ever wanted to go back and tinker with Final Fantasy 8, they would only have the finished product to work from. Heck, even the ports of FF8 on PS3 and PSP were ports of the PC version. Not the PS1.

So What Now?

The possibility still exists that Square-Enix could find the original build of the game. They could also painstakingly remake the game itself. But unfortunately, for now, all we have are the original PS1 copies and the ports on PC, PS3, and PSP. Who knows what the future holds?

I would love to see a remaster of Final Fantasy 8 in the same vein of FF7 and FF9 for the PS4 and now Nintendo Switch. Final Fantasy on the Switch would be wonderful, because I personally prefer epic RPGs in a handheld mode. It is very rare that I can sit down for the long stretch of time that an RPG requires. In fact, I first experienced Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9 on my PSP. And I wouldn’t change anything about that for the world. Hopefully, Final Fantasy 8 makes it to the Switch… some day.
