It’s been announced that a new Mortal Kombat movie will begin its pre-production stage and film in Adelaide, South Australia. The film will be produced by industry legend James Wan, famous for producing titles such as The Fast & The Furious films. Simon McQouid will make his directorial debut with this film. Mortal Kombat already has two feature films and a popular web series under its belt already.
That said, we’re here to discuss which characters from the Mortal Kombat franchise we would want to see the most. Whether it’s from the classic era, the 3D era or the modern era.
It wouldn’t be Mortal Kombat without the face of the franchise, Scorpion. The spectre of the Netherealm has always been a fan favourite within the community. The tragic tale of Hanzo Hasashi would give Scorpion a sympathetic and understanding reaction from the audience to counter his ruthless actions.
Scorpion’s vengeful attitude and badass abilities would give the film a great visual spectacle while also establishing the fantasy side of the franchise. Plus I think I can speak for everyone that we all want to hear the classic line, GET OVER HERE!!!
Nothing is cooler than a superpowered blind ninja, just look at Daredevil. Kenshi could be one of the lead characters who starts as a normal warrior which could lead to his origins of being blind. A blindness caused by the evil sorcerer, Shang Tsung, as an attempt to retrieve the sword for himself.
His mystic and heightened abilities alongside his blade could lead to some fun choreographic fight scenes. Perhaps the film could even introduce Kenshi’s son, Takeda, who becomes Scorpions protégé. Bonus points if they would cast Keanu Reeves as the blind swordsman.
Sub-Zero (Kuai Liang)
You can’t have Scorpion without his icy arch nemesis, Sub-Zero. I would choose Kuai Liang instead of his older brother, Bi-Han. Sub-Zero cyromancy abilities could help set some chilling set pieces similar to some of his scenes in Mortal Kombat movie in 1995.
Sub-Zero’s character development of redeeming the actions of the Lin Kuei and his brother, Bi-Han A.K.A Noob Saibot, could be an intriguing character arc. His conflict with Scorpion can also be treated as both nostalgia for the fans, and a cool, small plot element in the film.
Having the God of Thunder, Raiden, is a necessity for a Mortal Kombat movie. Raiden plays a big role in the story and lore of Mortal Kombat including the Elder Gods, Shao Kahn, and the tournament itself. Similar to both the original movie and Mortal Kombat 9, he could act as a guide for our main characters.
Having Raiden as the leading force for good could be a strong contrast against the evil forces of Shao Kahn and the future villains. Even better if later on in the film or a sequel tease, have Raiden transform into Dark Raiden. Potentially leading him to become an anti-hero himself.
Following after Raiden, I think it would be best suited to have his closest ally, Liu Kang, in the story. Liu Kang could be the main protagonist and our point of view for the Mortal Kombat tournament.
His martial arts abilities mixed with his fire techniques could lead to some exciting Kung-Fu action reminiscing classic martial arts movies. If Kung Lao is also in the film, both of them could lead to fun interactions throughout the story.
Last but certainly not less is the big baddie of the whole franchise, Shao Kahn. He could easily be the main antagonist of the film alongside the evil sorcerer, Shang Tsung. Shao Kahn’s role could be similar to Mortal Kombat 9 where his goal is to take over Earthrealm by winning Mortal Kombat.
If done right, Shao Kahn could be an aggressive and frightening villain for the movie, with powerful strength and imposing appearances. Of course, his main enemies would be Raiden and Liu Kang as they try to prevent Shao Kahn from completing his goal. Equipped with his Warhammer, Shao Kahn could have the same powerful presence similar to great villains such as Thanos from Avengers: Infinity War.
There are so many more characters I wanted to mention including Erron Black, Reptile, Kitana, and Noob Saibot. However, these are the main characters I believe could be the best addition for the film with their own purposes and narratives, if done properly. Hopefully, the movie can live up to fans expectations and just be a fun and, most importantly, good movie.
