The direction Mortal Kombat 11 took when it first launched was a bold one for both the gameplay and story. With it celebrating its one year anniversary a few weeks ago, and the game having many high and low moments throughout 2020, it is difficult to say what direction the game will go from here. While there are many who have a couple of choice words on how the fights are better and worse in comparison to Mortal Kombat X, we turn our attention towards the future of the Mortal Kombat 11 as it would seem we aren’t quite done yet with the story.
The Significance of “Part 2”
If you are someone who follows NetherRealm Studios and how they conduct themselves in game design, they usually follow a “two-year” support plan for their titles. After the launch of their game, they usually add in a couple more characters while working on their next big title. Mortal Kombat 9 (2011), Injustice: Gods Among Us (2013), Mortal Kombat X (2015), Injustice 2 (2017), and Mortal Kombat 11 (2019). This would mean that if the pattern follows as such, their next game should get an announcement, someone, in 2020, and be ready for release in 2021, right? That would be the case if they were still following this pattern, but they did confirm that support for Mortal Kombat 11 is going to expand well past the previous expectation date, although it’s difficult to say what that support was going to look like.
With this recent teaser trailer for Mortal Kombat 11’s story, we can see the one the big change from what other NetherRealm Studio games have not taken up to now: Continuing the story within the game title. Many were under the impression that we were going to have to wait for 2023 for “Mortal Kombat 12” where we find out what Fire God Liu Kang did, but instead, we got a teaser that will be continuing that story instead. The question now becomes: What’s going to happen next?
Speculating the Next Part
We are going to get more details tomorrow, but it never hurts to try and guess what we are going to get for an announcement.
When we last left Mortal Kombat, Liu Kang killed Kronika after absorbing Raiden’s powers and becoming a Fire God. With Raiden now a mortal and Liu Kang with not just these newfound powers, but the hourglass at his disposal, he would reshape reality as he sees fit. Already there’s kind of a somber moment here considering that Mortal Kombat 11 has three endings and we can confirm which one was indeed the “canon ending.” Unless if this cutscene just so happened to be hiding Kitana off to the side and saving her reveal for later, she is nowhere to be seen. Hence, it’s likely the ending where she doesn’t come back come is the official ending.
As if that wasn’t already a twist of the knife for our newly crowned Fire God, it turns out that Liu Kang couldn’t start messing with the hourglass for a minute without a portal opening up Shang Tsung walking forth with two others behind him telling him to stop before, “…you doom us all.” Raiden is kind enough to tell us that this is indeed the Soul-Sucking Sorcerer himself, but who knows what this could be about exactly. Could it be that Liu Kang somehow created a world that was even more screwed up than the one he and Raiden were previously in? Could this be a ploy for Shang Tsung to take the hourglass for himself? And how exactly will Raiden be able to help if it seems as though his god like abilities are gone?
Next Wave of Fighters Incoming?
So it won’t be too much of a shock to consider tomorrow’s reveal to come with a couple of new character announcements. Whether if it is returning Mortal Kombat characters or even more guest characters to fight with The Terminator, The Joker and Spawn.
A while back ago, there was a datamine leak which got everyone talking and speculating on the order we would get the Downloadable Content (DLC) and there were nine characters to look at. With six of those nine currently in the game, there’s three characters left, and at least two of those characters could be apart of this upcoming story. Many viewers have taken a wide range of guesses as to who these two characters are, but many are drawing the conclusion that it is Nightwolf and Fujin.
On the right side we see a character who looks to be carrying someone on his back. If you look at Nightwolf’s character model and see how he carries his axe on his back, it looks almost 1:1. With that and considering how prominent his role was back in Mortal Kombat 9, it’s understandable to think that he would side with Shang Tsung if Liu Kang’s tampering with the hourglass did spell doom for Earthrealm. As for the other character, you can see those elevated shoulder pads which is something Fuin does have on his character. While he didn’t have those shoulderpads in Mortal Kombat X, they were there for Mortal Kombat Armageddon. If this were the case, then perhaps this could be the way Fujin returns to the series as a playable character.
What’s Next For Mortal Kombat?
We are going to get more information tomorrow, but it is going to be a fun speculation period to figure out where we’re going to go from here. According to that Datamine leak, we could guess that at least three characters could be the aforementioned Wind God, Fujin, the current reigning Queen of the Shokan, Sheeva, and our next guest character from The Evil Dead, Ash Williams. Chances are that might be the last of DLC support Mortal Kombat 11 could get, but seeing a possible story expansion for an existing game is certainly an unexpected surprise. We will have to wait and see what this will entail and if this could be a way for us to see if any other characters will make a return or not.
Until then, do you have any hopes about the upcoming information for Mortal Kombat 11? Are there any characters you hope to see return? And will there be a chance of us getting any more guest characters to enjoy playing as and/or killing off?
