Mortal Kombat 11: Eight More DLC Characters? | Culture of Gaming

With Mortal Kombat 11 getting "years of support" that could mean more new fighters. With a recent datamine, we could be seeing alot more.

It may seem hard to believe Mortal Kombat 11 is only about a year old, and how much content is currently in the game. After the launch of the game, we got six DLC fighters that gave us guest characters like Terminator, Joker, and Spawn. Then as we got to the one year anniversary, we got even more with the Aftermath expansion which did extend the story, but gave us three more fighters, including Robocop.

Normally when we talk about games from NetherRealm Studios, they tend to operate under a “two-year post-launch development cycle.” During this time, they add additional fighters content to their current fighting game while preparing for the next upcoming game. While this pattern has been ongoing since 2011 between Mortal Kombat and the DC Universe based Injustice series, the cycle is coming to an end here. With no announcements for an “Injustice 3” yet, all eyes are set on what’s next for Mortal Kombat 11 as it will continue to get “many more years of support.” And while we did see a wide variety of content come to the game for both stages and even expanding the story, the thing everyone wants to know is: Who’s next?

TheThiny, took a deep dive into the data of Mortal Kombat 11 after the recent inclusion of additional skins for characters. Within the information, he did post the following tweet.

Now it is worth mentioning that this does not mean we are getting 19 more characters on top of all the DLC characters we got already.  Within the coding, each character that is not apart of the initial Mortal Kombat 11 roster is a “DLC fighter.” This means that while Shao Khan was a “Pre-Order” bonus, you did have to unlock him as he was the game’s first DLC. The second was Frost (who you can unlock by playing the game’s story mode). From there, the aforementioned season pass characters were characters 3-8, while the last three we got with Aftermath are numbers 9-11.

This would mean that we have eight more fighters on standby. Something to which if we look at the current Selection Screen for Mortal Kombat 11, you could fit in eight more perfectly.

Who could we expect to see?

So it’s one thing to say, “We are getting eight more fighters,” but it’s another to try and speculate who exactly would be could see as playable. It isn’t like you’re going to see Ed Boon just outright suggest any upcoming characters, right?

Yeah… People really do love themselves some Mileena in Mortal Kombat. Needless to say though that between the ongoing confirmation that she did die-off in Mortal Kombat X and how she is apart of Kitana’s Friendship, it would be difficult to say if she could find her way back into a playable status (at least within Mortal Kombat 11).

On the flip end, TheThiny also found audio files for Cyrax too. He does mention how he previously found sound files for Sektor too, but it is fair to put out that this does not automatically mean we are going to get playable cyber ninjas. Of course, considering how you can fight Cyrax and Sektor in Mortal Kombat 11‘s story mode, one could argue that they are already well on their way to joining the roster (although we saw this too with Non-Playable Characters in Mortal Kombat X, and they did remain unplayable).

The last thing to consider is who else we could see from previous Mortal Kombat games that could make their return into Mortal Kombat 11. While recent games did take pleasure in killing off the cast, it is always possible to see a couple of them return. It’s difficult to say who exactly it could be since it can range as from one extreme to the next. Some want Quan Chi to return while others think Stryker deserves his time in the spotlight again. Ninjas, characters from Mortal Kombat X, the wishlist is numerous.

Could there be Guest Characters?

It’s difficult to say if we are going to see any more guest characters considering how we already have four in-game already. Within the circumstances of Netherrealm titles, four tends to be the utmost limit for characters who aren’t within the series (or seven if we count each Ninja Turtle as an individual character separate in Injustice 2).

If we were to get eight more fighters, it could be possible that one or two could have nothing to do with Mortal Kombat, although who knows where you could go from here. In spite of how many movie slasher characters that did participate in Mortal Kombat up to now, fans still want to see more.  Michael Myers is a name that comes up every so often, but that could be a slight problem considering the Halloween series does not have any connections with Warner Brothers. A deal could be cut perhaps but that would be a lot of work in comparison to Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, Alien, and Predator.

Two possible choices

But there is another movie monster that did see distribution by Warner Brothers who got recent attention:

It’s kind of funny how many people really want to see Pennywise the Dancing Clown in Mortal Kombat. I guess they really want to see him use his headlights on someone and bite off their limbs or head. And honestly, it could be great to see what a rampaging Pennywise is capable of (while also giving him various creepy clown outfits, including dressing him up as Tim Curry).

Now… There is one “other” other Horror icon within Warner Brothers, and chances are you already said his name by now.

Even when Bruce Campell went to Twitter to perform his “Finishing Move” on rumors about Ash Williams in Mortal Kombat 11, fans are still as skeptical as ever. It doesn’t help how back when there were leaks for Mortal Kombat 11’s first Kombat Pack, some did seriously think Ash was a surefire considering how the “Leaked Intros” for other characters did match up to what they were in the final game 1:1. And yet while we saw Shang Tsung, Terminator, Spawn Joker, and so forth, Ash flew under the radar. Who knows if this was a clever ruse by the person who did post those interactions or that Ash was under real consideration, but they cut him at the last minute. But It’s probably best to not cut out Mr. Williams chances in this new round of DLC.

What do you think?

Do you think the datamine of eight more fighters is going to happen? Who do you hope to see make a return to Mortal Kombat 11? And are there any guest characters you would consider fighting in (and getting killed) in Mortal Kombat 11?
