Today, Disney announced that Marvel Heroes will be shutting down. The game was a free-to-play game available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Gameplay was reminiscent of Diablo, except with players controlling their favorite Marvel characters. The roster included Captain America, Deadpool, Thor, Ghost Rider, and even Squirrel Girl.
Disney’s Official Statement: “We regret to inform our Marvel Heroes fans that we have ended our relationship with Gazillion Entertainment, and that the Marvel Heroes Games will be shut down. We would like to sincerely thank the players who joined the Marvel Heroes community and will provide any further updates as they become available.”
The game originally released on PC in 2013 and has seen three iterations since release. The different versions available included 2015, 2016, and Omega. Marvel Heroes Omega officially launched on June 30, 2017 for PS4 and Xbox One.
This news doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise though because their social media accounts have been silent since Oct. 19, 2017. The last update added Loki as a playable character to consoles. Also, the game usually released new content to coincide with a new Marvel release. Unfortunately, Thor: Ragnarok did not receive any special content for the game. The game also didn’t host a Halloween event this year.
Disney didn’t disclose how they will handle shutting down the game. They didn’t announce whether they will continue to support servers or if the game’s servers will be closed. Hopefully, Disney will announce an official date for when the servers will be shutting down.
It will also be interesting to see what this means for Gazillion Entertainment. There are only two games currently on their website, Marvel Heroes and Dexter Slice. Here’s hoping they will keep their doors open and will successfully move on to other projects. There are current job listings on their site and some of the openings include senior level positions.
