Mario Kart Tour may have an excess of micro transactions, but that hasn’t stopped it from becoming the top day-one downloaded mobile game of all time.
According to SensorTower, Mario Kart Tour managed to reach 20 million downloads within 24 hours of its launch. That makes it the new record holder for most day-one installs among all mobile games. This trumps every other Nintendo mobile game, with Super Mario Run having the highest amount of 7 million downloads. The game has even exceeded Pokémon Go, which previously held the record at 6.7 million downloads on launch day.
Unfortunately, financial sales tell a different story. Mario Kart Tour produced $1 million during launch day, only making it the third best of Nintendo’s mobile IPs. This puts it behind both Fire Emblem Heroes and Super Mario Run, with the latter only launching on iOS to start. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, as the game’s pay-to-win structure and recently announced season pass subscription service likely puts off many players from spending money. This makes sense, as other mobile services, such as Apple Arcade, provide much more content for a reasonably lower price.
