On the May 22, Nintendo launched the closed beta for Mario Kart Tour, lasting until June 4 on Android / IOS. Currently, people are prohibited from sharing screenshots or recording the closed beta, but that isn’t stopping the brave few. Mario Kart Tour can be played in landscape or portrait mode and the controls differ from other Mario Kart games. The karts accelerate automatically and turn around corners as well, but you can depart from that path. If you prefer gyro controls, you can use them too.
Characters and Items
Mario Kart Tour has boosters, coins, and power-ups. The power-ups include the Red Shell, Banana, Green Shell, Thunderbolt, Mega Mushroom, Blue Shell, Super Horn, Bo-omb, Blooper, Bullet Bill, and the regular Mushroom. The characters include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Toadette, Donkey Kong, Daisy, Rosalina, Larry Koopa, Ludwig von Koopa, Waluigi, Koopa Troopa, Metal Mario, Lemmy Koopa. As well as Dry Bones, Bowser, Dry Bones Bowser, Morton Koopa Jr, Iggy Koopa, King Boo, Shy Guy, Roy Koopa, Wario, Yoshi, and the Baby Characters.
Each character has faster boosts than others on different tracks. Additionally, those characters are able to unlock three different items on that track. Unlocking three of the same enables unlimited use of that item over a short period. Invincibility and faster boosts also occur in this time-frame.
Mario Kart Tour includes micro-transactions to buy characters, with Emeralds as the currency. These are purchasable with real money or earned in-game. You can unlock rare characters with emeralds too. Other types of currency include coins, tickets, and hearts. Matches are played using hearts but you’ll have to wait for more if you run out.
A game is played as a circuit and each circuit has four races. Three of the races are normal matches and the forth is a single-player challenge. There are 10 known tracks and several of them are based on those from other games in the franchise. These include Choco Island, Mario Circuit, Rainbow Road, Koopa Troopa Beach, Kalimari Desert, Dino Dino Jungle, Luigi’s Mansion, Toad Circuit, Mario Circuit, and Daisy Hills.
