LEGO Super Mario Revealed By Nintendo and LEGO

After an initial tease from Nintendo and LEGO regarding a collaboration using the Mario franchise, an official trailer has dropped revealing LEGO Super Mario. This project will seemingly provide more than just LEGO sets, as the trailer shows off Mario interacting with various other bricks through different faces and sounds.

From what was seen, you can create Super Mario levels that the Mario figurine can traverse, with certain blocks causing a different reaction. It also seems that various characters and enemies from the Mario universe will come with these sets, such as Yoshi, Bowser Jr., and Piranha Plants.

In an interview with IGN, LEGO Digital Design Lead Jonathan Bennink discusses how Super Mario Maker heavily inspired what the team at LEGO created. He also goes further and explains the premise of how the built levels and Mario himself work. Mario will have a time limit to complete the levels while collecting coins, with certain blocks communicating with the technology inside Mario to cause its facial reactions. Bennink then clarifies that while Mario functions similar to Nintendo’s Amiibo figures, there are no plans to support Amiibo functionality. You can read the full interview here.

We currently don’t have a release date for LEGO Super Mario, but there is a planned release window of 2020. LEGO has also not confirmed how many sets and characters will be included within this product line.
