Gearbox has officially confirmed that following an update coming this fall, their online first-person shooter, Battleborn, will no longer be receiving new content. Creative Director Randy Varnell said in a post on the official Gearbox forums that “As of this week, there will be no more Battleplans and there is currently no planned content after the Fall Update.”
The Fall Update is set to include balance tweaks and new character skins, themed after Gearbox’s incredibly successful Borderlands franchise. The skins, revealed at PAX West, include Siren, Claptrap, and Zero.
This is a move that shouldn’t come as a surprise to many, as Battleborn has had a very rough existence since its May 2016 release. The game initially saw a fair base of players, but those numbers quickly diminished when Blizzard released their Battleborn competitor, Overwatch.
Gearbox has since released a Free-to-Play version of the game in June of this year but the game still hasn’t been able to top Overwatch as the top first-person hero shooter on the market. Gearbox promises that despite the lack of new content for the game, the servers will remain active and online for the foreseeable future.
Varnell’s focus will be shifting to “play a significant role” on an unannounced upcoming Gearbox title. Despite no official announcement from the developer, many believe the project is Borderlands 3, though we will have to wait for official word from Gearbox to be sure.
