Five Things Gamers Don’t Like

I’ve enjoyed video games for most of my life. However, there have been a few things that I’ve grown to dislike about them.

Micro-transactions

This is an obvious one. Personally, I wouldn’t say I like micro-transactions and can tolerate DLC, albeit barely. I honestly would prefer to pay my sixty dollars for my game and not have to pay again. DLC sometimes is worth the extra depending on the quality of the content itself. However, some unremarkable or extremely short DLC can be included in the game for free. Some companies do include free DLC, thus, I won’t complain too much.

Nonetheless, micro-transactions are not fine and are a serious problem. Star Wars Battlefront II was a recent example of the serious problems in micro-transactions. I also strongly dislike what Konami has done with Metal Gear Survive. In Metal Gear Survive players are forced to pay ten dollars for a save file (I mean what the heck). It’s these types of greedy shady business practices that make me frustrated. I especially despise micro-transactions that involve a pay-to-win system. What’s fair about paying money to cheat and have an advantage over another player?

Mandatory side-quests/collectibles

Side-quests should be done leisurely and at the player’s choice. Collectibles should be collected by people that want to go and obtain the in-game collectibles. Additionally, there are people like me that just want to speed through the game as quickly as possible.

I loved Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna~The Golden Country. However, the fact that I had to do side-quests really slowed things down for me. They weren’t mandatory, but you had to complete a certain amount of side-quests to progress through the game. The completion of certain amounts of side-quests created an unwanted block that slowed the game down significantly. This also creates padding which is something I hate even more. Padding and creating additional hours through mandatory side-quests and mandatory collectibles feels lazy and is extremely obnoxious.

Sonic Boom Shattered Crystals suffered from collectibles. Players were constantly forced to backtrack through stages to get at least two or three collectibles to progress to the next stage. This really was a pain in the ass. I remember having to backtrack through certain stages and spending twenty to thirty minutes on a stage looking for a worthless collectible. Sonic Boom abused padding and took it to another level. Playing through certain stages two or three times just to search for collectibles I never wanted really irritated me and made the game very boring and sluggish.

Long load screens/long save-screens

I don’t think anyone likes waiting for long load screens. Sonic 06 was famous for having long load screens. I mean who honestly wants to wait to continue to play the game. Waiting for long load screens is like having us wait longer than we must for food. Don’t keep us waiting for food and don’t keep us waiting to continue the game.

Generation four was my favorite generation of Pokémon, however, Diamond and Pearl had very long and painful save screens. Long save screens are almost as painful as long load screens. Trying to use the online services took way to long due to the long save screens and it felt painful and sluggish. Luckily overtime Pokémon fixed the long save screen issues.

Poor online

Have you ever tried to play Metal Gear online? I personally found Metal Gear Online fun. Nevertheless, the game could be a buggy mess sometimes. Enemies would move about randomly because you would lose a few frames, or the game would have a buggy moment. While online is not always perfect, having subpar online experiences can really make things painful. While I did like the Wii U, the Wii U had very subpar online experiences that had long lobby wait times. Have you tried playing Splinter Cell Blacklist on the Wii U? It was very painful waiting in the lobby for half an hour to play one ten-minute match.
