Fallout 76‘s long-awaited NPC update Wastelanders, will release for free on April 7th for all platforms. The game will also launch for the first time on Steam. The Wastelanders update will include a new main quest, as well as a revamped version of the game’s original main story.

Wastelanders NPC Update Details

The update will finally deliver NPCs, introducing quest givers and other NPC characters, a feature that was noticeably absent in Fallout 76‘s initial launch, which was a major complaint among players. Many fans of the originals’ black comedy and multiple-choice dialogue options felt that 76‘s world was lifeless and repetitive.

The update will also add new monsters and enemies to the game. Two faction packs will also be available for purchase in the Atomic Shop.

Fallout 76 on Steam

The update will also see a Steam release for the game, originally only available through Bethesda.net. However, Bethesda warns players looking to transfer their profiles that atoms (the in-game shop currency) and Fallout 1st memberships won’t transfer over.

“If you already have Fallout 76 on Bethesda.net, you will not be able to transfer your Atoms or Fallout 1st membership balance between Bethesda.net and Steam. Additionally, Atoms you earn are specific to one or the other platform. However, items you have purchased through the Atomic Shop will be shared across both platforms – Bethesda.net and Steam.”

The Wastelanders update will be free for players who already own the game or have an account. For new players, Bethesda will be selling two versions of the game, one with the base game and update, and a special edition that contains two faction packs.

Fallout 76 has accumulated controversies to an almost comedic degree since it first launched. Many criticized the game’s original release and its numerous bugs and repetitive quests.

The games in-game store has received backlash for incentivizing microtransactions and issues such as faulty special edition helmets and those non-existent duffel bags paint a grim picture for Bethesda’s online survival game.

Hopefully the update marks a turning point for 76 when it launches April 7th.
