Dr. DisRespect: What Exactly Happened?

Early afternoon, between around 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. EST on Sept. 11, 2018, live-streamer Dr. DisRespect was seen responding to a noise he had heard during stream. You could hear a small portion of it during the stream and see some confusion as to what was happening at the time. Dr. DisRespect leaves to go check out what was going on and comes back enraged. He relayed to his viewers in very brief gasps of words that someone shot at his house the day prior to that incident. He understandably shouted obscenity and said that [the shooters] just drove by, and called them a p***y on stream before signing off. It’s unclear if he thought it was one of his viewers watching at the time who was involved.

What We Now Know

Rest assured that it was not a real gun used; it’s being reported that it was a BB gun. The incident from the previous day was reported only to have been a car window shot out. Dr. DisRespect understandably “broke character,” shouted and raged, then shut off stream and left to go be with his family. The police were called around 1:30 p.m. EST and were investigating the incident soon after.

Despite the fact it wasn’t live ammo and only small pellets, it’s the mental state of the person being attacked. Yes, in this instance I would have to say “attacked.” I’m really glad this wasn’t as serious as it could have been.

What We Can Learn

Obviously this is not Dr. DisRespect’s fault in any case. He just happened to have been streaming at the time, playing the newest Call of Duty beta. This should not have happened to him, someone who just plays a character for views.

The internet itself is a lot of things and carries the weight of almost everyone and almost everything. Things like this happen, people go out and ‘jokingly’ shoot out windows, slash tires, or something else entirely. It’s a good idea not to give out too much information, such as having a Facebook or Twitch account and streaming your daily walks, or streaming your daily activities to and from work. A few notable people I have always followed were either stalked, had a joke played on them such as calling different pizza delivery places, and even having their house broken into while streaming. It may make sense to quite a bit of those who can think of it, but not everything thinks about how they can be safe from others online who may have an agenda in mind.

Now, I do not know if he has ever streamed outside of events or just outside his house in general, or even how the shooters gained access to his personal information like this. There are certainly background check type of websites; some even happen to be free to an extent. It’s possible they could use that. People who call or send messages who attempt to scam you for information. Even visiting certain sites can lead you open to viruses. Only thing we can learn from this is to protect yourself. There are pranksters, people who mean you harm, and people who just don’t care. There are also people to help in a time of crisis. Use your resources, whether it’s to get security cameras up, light fixtures for outside, a simple car alarm, or new locks if you need them.
