In an episode of IGN Unfiltered, id Software Executive Producer Marty Stratton and DOOM Eternal director Hugo Martin described re-popularizing the DOOM franchise. With the quickly approaching release of DOOM Eternal, the ninth game in the main franchise, excitement is high for the new installment. Many wonder how DOOM’s popularity has continued to flourish since the original 1993 release. Stratton and Martin’s site that is working with the “key ingredients” of DOOM keeps fans coming back. Both say that it is understanding these key elements that DOOM is continually popular. Misunderstanding these ingredients, on the other hand, has led to disapproval of new content in other franchises.

The two devs explained the most important part of their process with keeping the DOOM brand consistent. “A lot of time was spent working to figure out,” Martin stated, ‘What are the core elements of the DOOM brand?’ Not just DOOM the game, or [DOOM] 1, or 2, or 3, or 64, but the DOOM brand as a whole. The metal element, the sense of irreverence, power, all these different things.”

Stratton and Martin believe that many big franchises struggle with finding these key elements. Because of that, new additions to long time franchises aren’t accepted by fans. “I think when you see brands, and they struggle a little bit… Like, some of the new Star Wars films, a lot of the fans aren’t happy, it’s because I don’t think that they’re cooking with the same ingredients,” Martin said during the interview.
