Sometimes, one of the worst things that can happen to your game would be if information got out before the launch of your game. This can range from a wide variety of things that developers don‘t want to have known, such as story information, game play mechanics, or (with fighting games) the reveal of new characters. With Mortal Kombat 11, it is a bizarre case for sure considering how the game had an official announcement last month and the game is coming in April and even in a short time frame, we got ourselves a leak out of the Steam Achievements. If you don’t want to be spoiled, skip this story.
“Achieving” A Roster
While there isn’t much on Mortal Kombat 11 that we know of, Steam had a list of achievements thrown up that follows a particular pattern. Before I talk about the characters though, I thought it would be fun to point out the other achievements we have so far. We have 32 achievements so far and we do not know if this will be the final number or not. The reason I question this is that out of the 32, it doesn’t look like we have any multiplayer achievements yet. There’s a chance there won’t be any in the game, but let’s be honest here: we know there has to be online achievements.
So going down the list, we have the following achievements. With gear being a big thing with NetherRealm Studios, you will get one achievement by collecting 200 pieces of gear. There are also ones for completing 200 towers, and the tutorial. Brutalities are back where you get a trophy for 25 and 100 respectfully. Speaking of respect, there is a thing called “Mercy” where you will do it 10 times. Are Friendships coming back? The Crypt is coming back (God, please don’t let there be so many jump scares this time…) where you will impale 50 hanging bodies with a spear and run five miles. Finally, there are these “10 AI sets” and spilling 10000 pints of blood.
An interesting set of goals so far. It will be fascinating to see what Mercy and AI sets will be, although considering we can make our own variations here, maybe that is what that could refer to. For now, let’s jump into the juicy part of this whole list.
It is time to play…
Name! That! Character!
From the Trophy IDs on Steam, it states no character outright except for D’Vorah (to which I do not understand what “Defeat an opponent while D’vorah Bug” means). Considering her reveal during Xbox Insider though, that’s not much of a surprise reveal as the rest we got. Each character listed all have three letters shown, and it would be safe to assume it isn’t a code name either (at least for the moment). For example, to list off the characters we do know so far we got the following:
Now that we got that out of the way, let’s explore the rest.
Cas- Cassie Cage. We saw her in the trailer and it is only fair to guess this her.
Err- Erron Black. Got to love them outlaw characters.
Fro- Frost. Now this could be a fun one. We know that Frost was in MKX, but she was frozen over by Sub-Zero. Perhaps this time around, she will get to do more.
Jac- Jacqui Briggs. Now this could also be “Jackson” Briggs (or Jax), but I like to think that Jacqui will get her time to fight again.
Jad-Jade. Her absence in MKX was Bizzare considering how everyone else who got the axe became evil. Still, no denying who Jad belongs to.
Kot- Kotal Khan. Considering how he was ready to help invade Earthrealm, you know that Raiden likely is going to see out Kotal and murder him.
Kun- Kung Lao. Could be Kung Lin too, but considering you have Kung Lao fighting an evil version of himself, it is likely a fair bet it will be him.
Liu- Liu Kang. Again, fairly obvious.
The Three Unknown Names
Now that we got all those out of the way, there are still three names left that has players scratching their heads over.
Now remember for all we know, these three could be new characters. There are no other names in the Mortal Kombat world have a name that starts with these three letters. It could be a code to hide the identity of the actual character, but who knows if this is the case or not. While no one has any solid idea what “Cet” is, the rumor mill believes “Kol” stands for “Kollector.” Something about the name makes me wonder what exactly a character like Kollector would do, but I suppose until we get a confirmation, it is difficult to say.
That just leaves the last teaser name of “Ter“ and how some believe this is a hint at a possible guest character: The Terminator.
Honestly, I wouldn’t put it against anyone to think of that being the possibility, although I don’t know what the chances would be for this to happen. Still, we are getting Terminator: Dark Fate at the end of the year, so it would make sense if it were to get in to help promote the upcoming film. Who knows if they would go down that route or not, but there’s no denying that it would be rather fun to see a killer robot from the future fight. Especially if we already are playing with the theme of time.
Is this the Final Roster?
As much as I hate to say it, it could be (at least initially). According to a Premium Edition, Mortal Kombat 11‘s Kombat Pack will have 7 skins, 7 sets of gear, and a week early access to six DLC characters. This means that with our 19 characters here and the six that will come after launch that would fill out the roster character of 25 characters. Nothing if set in stone yet, but given what we might know for now.
I find myself conflicted by this since previously, we thought we would get Kitana and Johnny Cage. It is entirely possible that this achievement list is incomplete considering that Geras is nowhere here. Odd considering the game has an achievement with the other characters, so why would he be left out? Also, you mean to tell me that Takeda and Kung Jin didn’t make the cut? I have my doubts on that, but again, we will have to wait and find out.
