Many of the best online games in recent years have been set in the United Kingdom and due to this, we thought that we would bring you a selection of the best ones. The UK has an incredibly long and diverse history which makes it a perfect place for a video game to be set in. London especially, both historical London and modern London, is a fantastic scene setter and many game developers have taken notice of this which is why so many games are now set in the UK capital city of London. In 2021, you will find games showcasing gambling in modern UK cities as well as games taking players back in time to Victorian London and even one game which looks to showcase how London would be if the Nazis were successful during World War Two – scroll down to number five on our list to find this game!
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate
Released in 2015, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate takes place in Victorian era London. Although not strictly an online game, there are still some online elements to this instalment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise including online leaderboards. The year is 1868 and it is the end of the Industrial Revolution in the UK.
The player must control twins Jacob and Evie Frye and setup a new Assassin Brotherhood in London. You will bump into various notable figures of the era such as Charles Darwin, Charles Dickens and even Karl Marx. Our favourite character interaction is with Sergeant Frederick Abberline who is known as the lead investigator of the Jack the Ripper killings. Solving crimes and later discovering the identity of Jack the Ripper accounts for a huge amount of fun.
Anyone with an interest in Victorian London will love this game. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate remains one of our favourite games in the franchise.
Watch Dogs: Legion
Developed and published by Ubisoft, Watch Dogs: Legion is the third instalment in the popular Watch Dogs series of games. Set in a dystopian London, the story of the game follows several hackers who are falsely accused of terrorist bombings. The game revolves around an open world setting which is free to explore. There is a multiple number of characters which the player can control. The gameplay consists of driving, shooting, stealth and puzzle solving.
Watch Dogs: Legion gives the user an original and realistic way to play the game by enabling the option of permadeath before starting a new game. If this mode is enabled, then when any character dies, they will remain dead for the remaining duration of the game. The online part of the game allows four players to play through the game as a team.
Watch Dogs: Legion Online uses a season system which updates each month. As players compete missions, they will rank up and unlock rewards including weapons skins and clothing.
Monopoly Big Event
The streets of London and further afield are available for the taking in the Monopoly Big Event slot game. Regarded as one of the most played slot games, Monopoly Big Event offers players a high RTP percentage which, theoretically speaking, increases the chances of winning. There are lots of slot games with UK themes, but we thought we would take you through the game which allows you to purchase your very own London street or railway station.
Monopoly Big Event is based on the UK version of the Monopoly board game. With a variety of different features including sticky wilds, extra wilds and free spins, the aim of the game is to land the highest paying symbols in order to trigger the free spins round. With an RTP (return to player) potential of 99%, this is one of the best online slot games currently available. Some of the symbols include famous Monopoly tokens such as the top hat and dog as well as famous London Streets from Mayfair to Whitechapel Road.
This UK based slot is regarded as one of the highest paying slot games. There are lots of UK slot sites and casinos which allow their players to play the Monopoly Big Event game too.
Here we have an action role-playing game which involves the player taking the role of Dr Jonathan E. Reid who was made into a vampire and roams the streets of London looking for the blood of victims. The game is set in post-World War 1 London in the year 1918.
Vampyr really allows you to immerse yourself in the life of Dr Reid. To level up as a vampire, you will need to drink blood, but it is possible to go through the whole game without killing any citizens and doing so unlocks one of four endings. Of course, we won’t spoil them for you here, but it really pays off to try and complete the game without killing anyone.
There have been many games based on vampires recently, from the Bloodsuckers slot to Vampire: The Masquerade. Vampyr was released to mixed reviews but we really enjoyed our time playing it.
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Have you ever imagined what London would look like if the Nazi’s successfully invaded British shored during World War Two? This is what Wolfenstein: The New Order gives you – an alternative history version of London under occupation of the Third Reich! The Nazis dropped an atomic bomb on Manhattan to achieve victory. The player gets the opportunity to see how various cities around the world would look like under Nazi occupation.
This game won numerous awards and became the second best-selling game of 2014. Critics loved the re-imagined future and so did we. We recommend playing Wolfenstein: The New Order on the hardest difficulty so that you can really unveil the true brutality of the Nazi regime.
The Order: 1886
Released in 2015 for the PS4, The Order: 1886 is set in an alternate history London where werewolves and vampires roam freely. Your mission, as one of the Knights of the Round Table, is to battle to keep the world safe from such monstrous animals.
The game brings together a mixture of different historical events combined with fantasy and myth and the game certainly is fun. Unfortunately, there is no online aspect to The Order: 1886 which is unfortunate as we feel this game could have done with an Alien v Predator type online multiplayer mode where there is a team of Knights versus a team of half-breed Vampires and Werewolves.
We love action-adventure games here at CultureofGaming and without doubt one of our favourite games of all time is Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception which takes the player to locations across the world including the United Kingdom.
Queen Elizabeth I and Sir Francis Drake feature heavily int eh games main storyline as treasure hunter Nathan Drake searches for the lost city of Iram of the Pillars. However, it is also the multiplayer component which we are fond of. Unfortunately, the multiplayers servers have now been terminated but we highly recommend still checking out the single player storyline if you haven’t already.
