With August over with, many of us will begrudgingly be returning to school to begin a new series of classes and exams. Fortunately, September doesn’t have to be all dread and despair, as a slew of amazing games will release throughout the month. So, for those of you that seek a way to cope with the anxieties of a new school year, here are five games coming out this month that will give you something to look forward to.
1. Marvel’s Spider-Man
What better way to kick off September than with one of the most anticipated games of the year? Developed by Insomniac Games, Marvel’s Spider-Man offers a new take on the classic super hero. The game follows a 23-year-old Peter Parker/Spider-Man as he tries to balance both his hero life and personal life while also defending New York City from threats such as Mr. Negative and the Sinister Six. With a giant open-world environment, enticing story, and visually pleasing gameplay, Marvel’s Spider-Man is gearing up to create one of the best experiences of 2018. Spider-Man fans can swing into a new adventure on the PS4 starting on September 7th.
2. Shadow of the Tomb Raider
The newest installment to the reboot of the Tomb Raider series seems to take a darker tone than its predecessors. Shadow of the Tomb Raider continues the thrilling story of Lara Croft as she tries to prevent a Mayan apocalypse from occurring at the hands of Trinity. The game seemingly improves on the formula from the rest of the series, with grand environments along and more stealthy combat. Though it may not deviate too far from the games before it, Shadow of the Tomb Raider will certainly satisfy fans who enjoy the core aspects of the Tomb Raider series. Players will be able to start raiding tombs on the Xbox One, PS4, and PC on September 14th.
3. Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country
OK, so this may not technically count as a new game, but with enough content to justify a physical release, it’s worth a mention at least. As the newest set of DLC for Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna – The Golden Country tells of the events that occurred 500 years before the main game. The story will feature both returning characters from the main story, as well as new characters that haven never been seen before. It will also include a ton of new features such as new Titans to explore, a reworked combat system, and the ability to play as both Drivers and Blades. While the DLC will release both physically and digitally on September 21st for the Nintendo Switch, those who purchased the expansion pass for the main game will receive it early on September 14th.
4. Life is Strange 2
The next addition to the Life is Strange franchise follows brothers Sean and Daniel Diaz as they run from the police after a supernatural incident. Like previous entries, this game gives players the power to greatly influence the ending results based on the choices made throughout the story. If Dontnod Entertainment’s past track record gives any indication, we should expect to be put through an emotional ride with this game. Players can enjoy the first episode of this vivid tale on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on September 27th.
5. FIFA 19
Sports game fans can rest easy knowing that FIFA 19 will soon be within their grasps. The upcoming addition to the popular soccer franchise brings the classic elements that fans love and then some. The most intriguing new features include the Champions League License and the conclusion of the story mode found in more recent titles in the series. The game also seems to improve on the gameplay, with better controls, the ability to change strategies during matches, and a 50/50 system to determine battles for the ball. Players can begin scoring with FIFA 19 on the Xbox One, PS4, and PC on September 28th.
