Today came with some sad news for the Nintendo community. Early on February 21st, 2019, Nintendo announced that Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Amie would be retiring from the company. Within his statement, Fils-Aime explained that on April 15, 2019, he would step down as President. He will be succeeded by Vice President of Sales Doug Bowser as the new President of Nintendo of America.
To say that Reggie Fils-Aime left a huge mark on both Nintendo and its fans would be an understatement to say the least. Fils-Amie won the hearts of gamers with his down-to-earth nature and love of Nintendo games. As we honor Reggie’s noble decision, let us look back at some of the times and events from his career that made him the President that we all know and love.
1. My Body Is Ready
How could we make a list of great Reggie moments and not include the moment that put him on map. During Nintendo’s E3 2007 Presentation, the company revealed there latest product at the time: Wii Fit and its Balance Board. Nintendo Producer Shigeru Miyamoto then continued by giving a demonstration on how the Wii Fit Balance Board worked. Fortunately, Reggie was there to assist in the demonstration, where he exclaimed his famous phrase: “My Body is Ready!” This line would take the world by storm. Fans everywhere would produce memes, gifs, and other forms of media revolving around Reggie and his statement for years to come. What seemed like an innocent remark would become the one of the most memorable things from Nintendo and gaming.
2. Nintendo Muppets
Another iconic Reggie Fils-Aime’s moment has to come from Nintendo’s E3 2015 Event, where he, along with Miyamoto and the late Satoru Iwata, took the form of Muppets. Yes, with the help of Jim Henson Studios, Nintendo managed to take the three leaders of the company and make them into wacky cartoons. While the game that the bit promoted didn’t perform that well, the show was memorable for fans. This event not only exemplified Nintendo’s classic goofy and lovable nature, but also showed the fun side of the company’s big three, including Reggie.
3. Reggie’s Kickin’ Ass!
What better way to end this list than with the moment that started it all. At Nintendo’s E3 2004 show, an unknown man took the stage to introduce himself. He stated “”My name is Reggie. I’m about kickin’ ass, I’m about takin’ names, and we’re about makin’ games.” This line set the tone for who Reggie was and what his approach to leading Nintendo of America would be. Reggie was all about pushing Nintendo by simply making good games, a philosophy that seems to be lost on other video game companies. We didn’t know it at the time, but Mr. Fils-Amie would help guide Nintendo to some of the greatest years it has ever seen.
Thank You Reggie
Reggie Fils-Aime aided in ushering in the Golden Age of Nintendo. He played large roles in the success of the Wii, the DS, the 3Ds, and the Switch. Now, the President we adore is setting off for some much needed relaxation. In his goodbye statement, Reggie explained that he will spend more time with his family and friends during his retirement. I think I speak for all of us both here at Culture of Gaming, along with the rest of the Nintendo community when I say: “Go ahead Reggie, you’ve earned it. From all of us here at Culture of Gaming, we’d like to say thank you Reggie for all the laughs, innovations, and great games that you’ve given us. You will truly be missed”.
