From some of the minds who helped develop Layers of Fear and >observer_, comes a new cyberpunk FPS, 2084. For a game such as this, there are polarizing elements, but they it’s very standard. This game being a very basic and bare bones shooter. While playing, you see just how simple the game can be, especially in the realm of cyberpunk. From hacking to boss battles, and even the story, everything is laid out for us. Sit back and relax as we dive into 2084 to see whether you should even check it out. Since it is an early access title, it’s best to start off with first impressions. Be ready for a possible full review once there’s been an official release. Here we are to give our first impressions on 2084.

2084 is…decent?


Once we manage to get through less than 30 seconds of tutorial, the game begins. During the start of 2084, we get a short message someone has left the company, and that’s it. That’s the story we start off with. As we progress, the realization is there is no real story. In fact, the zombies are all a part of a virtual program. They pop in and out of existence and are some of the most average-looking enemies. It’s just another zombie game, with what is seen as hacking. Really, all you are doing is pressing 3 buttons, sometimes more if required. Ammo can be scarce, especially having grenades that use up the same ammo bar. Even in a cyberpunk game, they should have been separated. Using your grenades costs loads of ammo very quickly.

2084 is seen by some as a reskin of another game by the same developers, called >observer_. That game has received positive reviews for the most part. It’s possible that 2084 could change drastically between now and official release, but it’s being sold for $10 on Steam. Price is only half the indication you get with what to expect out of this game. It’s not a terrible game by any means either, and others would be quick to point out that 2084 can be fun to play. In short bursts, of course it can be.

Looks good at least, right?


Graphically, 2084 looks alright. There is nothing to write home about, especially when bosses often don’t look particularly refined. The first boss battle type of fight you get looks good and feels good. However, the only indication it was any type of boss battle was the fact you get a cut-scene immediately after. It didn’t even occur to me that the final enemy of that level had HP until the green bar reached about halfway. Often, even out of the most budget titles, there is some amount of indication of a boss either before or during battle. Needless to say, the first boss battle ended quickly.

When you use your weapon, it looks polished and fluid. The bright colors make it easy to see where you’re shooting, even with someone who has trouble distinguishing color. One of the draws in a game like this should be environment and atmosphere, in which case there is little of that here. Walls and doors all look and feel the same. Throughout the game everything just felt plain and uninteresting.

There are zombies in this zombie game! …There are also things…


Running down a corridor with millions of closed doors kind of drives a person crazy. There’s no way to enter through a closed door unless something prompts a hack. Maybe it’s possible to go through some random closed doors later. Although, we have found nothing thus far. The horror aspect amounts to pop-ups of some hordes of zombies. Initially, you might jump, however that’s only within the first few seconds. There are points where they just dump zombies at you. Literally, there are arena-like areas, and the zombies almost fall from the sky. Pit of despair is more like it, because it all feels like padding.

Don’t mind the bugs in this game either. You can stand in a corner and shoot enemies with no resistance. The zombies will and do stand still, not attacking if you’re in that spot. During the first arena fight, there is a small platform inside the building where the same thing can happen. It was not difficult to find the safe zones.

Final thoughts and impressions


2084 is lacking interesting gameplay. There currently isn’t enough content to fill the void. It’s at least a decent shooter for a good price. However, for a game that has hacking and virtual reality as the focus, I expected more action. Perhaps not much more, but it would have been nice to get more depth to the game before the early access release. Some dialogue here and there between player and boss would allow for better storytelling, even if they decide to leave the majority of the story open to interpretation.

At its current state, 2084 is passable. Wait for further development. Even for the price, it’s still a a good game. However, there isn’t enough of an engagement between enemies or the story. There’s also very little in the way of challenge, if you know where to stand to shoot. If people want to check the game out though, $10 is a reasonable price. There are far worse early access games to spend your money on.

Review Summary

While 2084 feels good at the surface to play, there is no substitute for a good story-driven game. In current form, it’s “just another zombie game.” The game has a lot of potential, and given time it can be good. The graphics aren’t really a problem, it’s more level design and enemy interaction. We look forward to when this game comes out of early access. For only $10, it’s not a terrible game to check out by any means, but as someone who plays FPS games regularly, this feels like a pass.
